Using the Solomon Islands 1942 map from HBF. I'm the U.S. army and is starting at the edge of the beach. Any hex with land on half I can shoot from.  Japan sets up 1st. using the whole map except the full water hexes.  15 units per 100points. Also no aircraft bad weather.

U.S. Army 400 points against a 300 point Japanese army.

This will happen Friday 6 November 2009.

I will give builds of both armies after the battle.  Give your take on the up and coming battle. The guy I'm up against is good but beatable.

Any idea of his style?  Agressive, defensive, etc?

He is only aggressive when he has overwhelming odds in his favor.  So I would say he's defensive.  But sometimes he surprises me.

Alright.  Considering you outnumber him he will lose.  I know that sounds definite.  The only time i've ever won as JP was when it was 400 JP VS 200 US.  He doesn't have enough.  Unless he's an insanely good player who is experienced JP you have a very good chance of winning.

This is the rematch.  The 1st time I couldn't get off the beach.  My tanks had no trouble but were picked off after all my infantry was killed on the beach.  He does know his Japaneses army.  I did go in thinking it was going to be easy.  So I used light tanks (Stuarts).  He used obstacles on the beach.  We have a house rule that commanders have spotter ability.  So I was mortared on the beach as well.  He is good.

Historicaly you could use the M7 Priest. But if it's not historical I would recommend M4A3 (105) Sherman (it has bombardment), with a Sherman commander (units within 2 hexes roll an extra attack dice), M3 Stuart (blazing guns double attack), M12 GMC, or M4 Sherman T-34 Calliope. For infantry Marine M2 Flamethrower, M1 81mm mortar, Rangers, Thompson gunners, M1 Garand + Red Devil Captain. A sniper might be handy too.

All of the above mentioned vehicles have excellent anti-infantry attacks. But have a good enough anti-vehicle attacks to deal with Japanese tanks. The infantry are tough and could give the Japanese a run for their money.

I'd recommend a slow assault, keep your infantry near your vehicles to stop any close assaults. Your vehicles can bombard/blast any forest/jungle hexes. Try to keep your units in a formation that allows them to cover one another. That way your opponent won't be able to attack you without being attack by several of your units.

I agree with Toronto here.

If you are getting init. bring a BAR gunner or 2.  I love them (unrevised card).  Any tank can deal with jap tanks, they have no armor.  You could do a Calliope assault or 105 Assault.  I wouldn't vary too much what you bring,.

I do miss the old BAR gunners.  Now keep it historical, didn't they have shermans moving up with the marines? Now if you've seen the map its a long way to the other side where the huts are.  That's the objectives.  Three of them. I must take two of them and destroy the third to achieve victory.  I've have ten rounds to do it in.  Also thanks for your input.

OK, thanks for the extra info CappyTom. Is there a year limit? 1942 I would imagine.

Historical Pacific front tanks

M7 Priest
M4 Sherman
M3 Stuart
M5 Stuart
M3 Grant/Lee
== Sherman Commander = could be added

M5 halftrack
jeeps
trucks

P-40

Infantry
M8 howitzers
37mm gun M3 (should be able to deal with any Japanese tank)
M1 81 mm Mortar
M1919 MG

These are just some good units that took part in the war in the Pacific. You could go with an infantry heavy build.

Thank you for the Intel. If you know the maps he will be setting up using the whole map.  It's imperative that I get off the beach and out of the water asap.  With no cover and coming in in waves, once I get to cover I can make a beach head and start moving in land to the objectives.  The fastest way is by the paths with no jungles so as not make all those movement rolls. So simplicity will work best I think.

Hello all,
Sorry for the laps in time.  Played the scenario last Friday.  He wanted to use a few custom pieces he make.  I said fine.  It was close but I took the beach by shear will.  Lost most of my men in the landing but finally broke out on the right flank.  Won by points as the game was running long.  That map is a fantastic island map.  When starting in the water with only one row of hexes to shoot from makes it tough to get off the beach. I'm getting a list of the special units he used and will post it when I get it.
