Im finishing up my WW1 squadron, mostly for AP scenarios like War Plan Red, Gunboat Diplomacy, etc etc.  Past few days Ive been working on one of the big American Armored Cruisers of the Tennessee Class.  I recycled an old scratchbuilt hull and built the USS Washington/Seattle out of it.

So far... not so far...still loads of work on her.

How do you manage to get your four stacks so even?  I have a heck of a time cutting styrene tubing.

A couple of things about cutting styrene tubing (from my point of view I guess)... First, use a chisel blade.  Dont use a normal xacto blade, you'll fail... and usually cut yourself in the bargain.  Second, when you cut the styrene you can do one of two things.  You can use a miter-box and hand saw... Xacto makes them along with plenty of other hobby blade companies.  The best is the jewler's saw which can take flat blades, or wire blades.  Or you can use the chisel blade (what I use) and eyeball the cut.  When youre cutting, the blade by some strange form of hobby physics, will drift and leave you with an angle cut, rather than a straight cut.  This has to do with the shape of the blade, its cutting edge, and the density of the styrene itself... its virtually small grade PVC.  SO, take this into account, and always cut downward at a slight angle into the styrene.  This still wont be perfect, but it is closer to straight.  Make sure to cut all funnels for the same ship at the same time.  Lay them next to each other, and trim them TOGETHER.  After they have been glued to the ship, and dry, sand the top using an emory stick (this is what ladies use for fingernails).  Dont apply pressure when sanding, just let the stick do the work and you will end up with relatively striaght stacks.

I must admit, at first I was really put off by the styrene ships.  They looked too clunky, like they were made with random nuts and bolts.  You guy's have definitely improved over the year as the detail level has gone up (helped by the older ships with casemate guns) and they're starting to lose that assembled out of circles and squares feel and moving into modeled figures.

Bravo!

Nice job! Mate...
War plan Red sounds like it would be an interesting scenario!!!

Hmm the US gets into a tiff with the UK over access rights to the Suez...   Dipomacy fails...
or
US backs India's fight for independance from England and Diplomacy fails...
or
US backs Japan and England backs China when the Japanese try expansion into China for critical resources...
