Based on as reliable data as possible. I'll be adding more variants here later.

Feel free to comment or post your own data or pilot accounts in each aircraft's topic.

Australia had 1 gift plane. The others were in English squadrons with aussie pilots. This trained quite a few before they had to transfer to the Pacfic in which they moved to P40's and later Spitfires.

Interesting distribution on ammo between the .303 machine guns and the 20mm cannons.

2672 rounds for the MG's and only 364 for the cannons. I realize the 20mm is a much more effective round, but that's over 7 times more MG ammo. Switching from one version to the other would certainly require a significant change in shooting habits (no more spray and pray) !

Armoured windscreens were often retro-fitted as an in-service modification. Bob Standford-Tuck ('Lucky Tuck') had one of his close escapes as a result. A bullet-proof windscreen was fitted to his Hurricane in the morning, in the afternoon of the same day he took two direct hits from a rear-gunner which he is sure would have killed him.

A enterprising sergeant pilot found that by knocking out a wing bulkhead inside the wing the ammunition of his Hurricane could be increased to 400 rpg on two of the four guns in each wing. It became an unofficial modification on several Hurricanes.

One Hurricane was fully operational at North Weald (near me) with 151 Squadron with a full cannon armament during the Battle of Britain. While 19 Squadron's cannon-armed Spitfires were a source of great frustration due to jamming, this single cannon-armed Hurricane was a considerable success and paved the way to the early introduction of cannons into Hurricanes. It would probably have had the 60 round drum magazine which was common at that time.

19 Squadron became so disillusioned with their new cannon-armed Spitfires that they arranged to swap them with a similar number of war weary Spits held by a forward maintenance unit just so that they could get guns which actually worked.

The principal problem with the cannon-armed Spitfire was jamming under 'g' load due to turning the guns through 90 degrees to get them in the wing. As I understand it, later the Spitfire's wing was bulged over the gun breeches and the gun was mounted upright with great success. There was even a four-cannon Spitfire but this was rarely encountered. Again, as I understand it, the shock of firing four cannons was deemed too much for the Spitfire and it was usual to fire the cannons in separate pairs.
Later the Spitfire semi-standardised to one cannon and two light mgs in each wing or one cannon and one heavy mg.

The Bf 109 and the Spitfire had two triggers, one for machine guns and one for cannon. The theory was that you fired aiming bursts with the machine-guns, noted where the tracers were going and 'chimed-in' with the cannons when you saw the machine-gun tracers begin to strike home.
