Dear All,

please find here my entry for "Best Modification/Scatchbuild of a WaS Unit" category.
It represents the conversion of the heavy cruiser Bolzano in a launching aircraft ship.
The name is Astore and she was supposed to enter in services sometimes in 1943.
It is not the miniature already available on Shapeways but it is totally scratchbuilt.
I used styrene sheets and rods.
The hull is shaped like the original ship while for the superstructures I was inspired by the design of the project available on the web.
The aircraft are made by hand one by one while the guns are the 90 mm turrets already mounted on the Italian battleships.

HMS London. This is a HMAS Australia model with the forward superstructure replaced by a heavily modified one from Uganda. 2x Uganda cranes, a scoutplan from Gotland and a strip of styrene, plus a lick of paint completes her:

A very simple mod, the following is  the proposed refit of the Gneisenau. During bombing raids while in harbor, bombs started a fire which seriously damaged the forcastle of the ship, A proposal was dusted off which was to re-arm the ship with twin 15 in turrets of the Bismark type. All literature I've read indicate that outside the turrets, all other modifications were to the ships internals to support the barbette so that it could take the increased weight. It was also considered to increase the length of the ship to restore the trim, but the project ended after the fore part was cut away. Here's to hoping that TN does a card.

My entry is a scratchbuilt First Strike unit, the Joffre.  It is built mostly from wood, with a shaped pine hull and a tongue depresser shaped into the flight deck.  The superstructure is based on a piece of pine with various bits and pieces applied: The main guns are basswood turrets drilled for brass wire barrels.  The funnel is shaped from wood with a styrene catwalk applied.  The secondary armament was donated from a Lamotte Piquet, who also provided two of the boats (the other four I made) and the plane in the midships hanger.  The cranes were made from bits of basswood and styrene.  The top of the bridge is from a Sackville, which seemed like a good choice because it fit and by an odd circumstance with a Chinese vendor, I have 23 of them.  The deck lines were done with a white gel pen, which I sealed with spray shellac (an old woodworker's trick) because they would smear when I applied varnish.

Overall, it was a fun project - my first scratchbuilt ship.  I photographed the ship on a sample of some inkjet-printed bases I've been working on.

This is only my second mod, HMS Gotland. I was inspired by the "Got Gotland" thread to turn this unit into something I would be proud of. I added a new mast and crane aft, and I had 2 planes to put on, but one day I just lost one of them, and even after turing the room over, I still couldn't find it. So here it is, my first entry in this DGBA field: HMS Gotland.

Edit: I apologize, on this as well as all my pictures, for poor quality (old camera) and backround blankness. My maps were nowhere to be found just when they were neded. Go figure.

I did not not do a lot of modeling this year, but here is my take on the "Blue Cruiser" Tashkent. A straight mod using Scipione Africano. Removing one turret, modifiying the smoke stacks, adding torpedo tubes and trimming some of the superstructure.

I did some washes with a darker blue to regain some depth I lost during painting. Again, I accentuated the paint job with some red elements to keep the ship somewhat in line with the rest of my Soviets.

Well, nice to see so many excellent scratchbuilds and mods!

Here's my 2 cents:

King George V, in hot pursuit of the Bismarck!

A plasticcard scratchbuild from bow to stern. Barrels (primary and secondary) made out of brass tubing, mounted on one of Reachers' excellent bases with added water effects. Main turrets are able to turn.

The building process can be seen on my blog: http://calltoarmsmwg.blogspot.nl/...g-george-v-and-hms-prince-of.html

The Prince of Wales has been finished and sold for quite a few months now and I've never came to finish the KGV for myself till very (VERY) recently.

Enjoy!
