Post subject: SS Panzer Division Wiking
|
|
|
After being almost destroyed twice, once in the winter of 41 and then again early in 43, the SS Division Wiking made up of Danish and Norvegian volunteers (plus a few French, Estonian and yes, even a few British) was put to rest and upgraded to a Panzer division with the arrival of a panzer regiment with its complement of Mark IV's and V's. To the despair of these volunteers the now Panzer division was kept in reserve during the Kursk Offensive. When it became obvious that the soviets had taken the initiative and broken through the Kharkov line threatening to encircle several SS divisions, the Wiking division was sent to a forested area South West of Kharkov to keep the roads open for a timely whithdrawal of their colleagues of the Liebstandarte...Only to discover that units from the Steppe Front were already there.
Maps:
F2 (upside down)-F1
special rules:
treat the 3 marsh hexes on f1 as mountain hexes;
treat jungle hexes as forest;
All units may set up up to 5 hexes from their side;
Soviet units ignore the commandant dependant SA.
Germans set up on F2 and soviets on F1;
this scenario makes use of the NA map pack and units from several AA minis editions.
I used the book "Division Wiking" (edition fayard) by Jean Mabire as a source.
Steppe Front forward units:
Commisar
mosin x4
dp 27 x2
ppsh x 4
maxim mgs x2
sniper
82mm mortar
zis AT
SU 85 x2
T34/76
SS Panzer Division Wiking:
ss leader
ss panzergrenadier x8
mg 42
81mm mortar
7.5 g18
grizzled veteran
sd kfz 251
stug III
panzer IV f2 x3
Victory conditions:
The german player wins if he controls at least 2 hexes of the mountain block that overlooks the road on F1. Otherwise its a soviet win at the end of turn 7 and the Liebstandarte division wont be able to withdraw in time! |

Had a go again last night at this fun scenario.
The Wiking guys just about made it onto the hill with mounted grenadiers on top of the halftrack (kept in reserve and out of sight until turn 5) and their last panzer IV. (by the way these panzer IV's F2 are the recosted ones 22points without the ss determination SA). There was a dramatic tank/AT battle South of the map for control of that forested road leading to the hill.
The soviet infantry, once again rushed forward and destroyed 2 german tanks with their close assault dices. the german grenadiers under constant maxim fire just couldnt keep up with their tanks advance. Nevertheless they did well and were within firing distance of the hill at the end of the game.
With only 7 turns to go the german player has to have a go at the hill! |

Guten Tag, General Hoth. Wiking certainly had a colorful history and this scenario looks interesting. Although I have a powerful distaste for the combat system and rules of AAM, I still use the figures for other systems which I find more palatable.
I think a mini campaign following this division throughout it's history would be very attractive. LAH, Das Reich and Totenkopf are more thoroughly known by the casual wargamers. (At least those educated in the West) Wiking was an East Front Division, and I think a good candidate to educate those who are not as familiar with the Eastern Front. Auf Wiedersein, Herr General. _________________ Gaming for 36 Years.

hello.
it's funny you mention a mini campain following this division as i just bought another book (printed in the late 70's) by the same author following the early combats of the men from Wiking. Also by jean Mabire i was offered the strory of The SS LAH. Those books are just awesome detail wise and offer great pictures (black and white) of the leaders and their men not mentionning the exact formations used during battle. So OK i'll get started on a mini campaign focusing on the Wiking. If only i had more maps... _________________
