I was on and in Texas in 1986.  The tour as laid out then took you into a main battery turret and the superstructure.  I thought then the ship needed a refit and some scraping and painting.

There aren't many steel ships in the world that don't need some scraping and painting.  And there aren't many museums in the world that don't need some extra volunteers for that kind of thing.

HMS Belfast is hardly a light cruiser. HMS Penelope or HMS Ajax are light cruisers, by the time you get to Belfast you are really talking a heavy cruiser  with six-inch guns.

I'd just call her a cruiser.

HMS Caroline was not active in WW2 although she was afloat.

the South Dakota might sorta qualify.  There is a South Dakota park with pieces of the ship arrayed inside of a concrete footprint of the ship.

ya the volunteers on the Texas do their best... i know i helped for 3 years.
in addition to scrape photo paint. repeat.... we also did living history events on board and issued tours to whatever tourist happend to come aboard that day.  the current batch of fellas are pretty active in fundraiseing as well, the state approved a plan to build a dry dock around her and it will then be possible to preserve her (in floating condition) for a very long time. Smile but as always moneys are a issue  Rolling Eyes

sorry that ship is something of a trigger for me. Very Happy
