1. Start a thread where you ask for an opponent.

2. Choose a map and agree on year, sizes of armies, location of objective, number of rounds, deployment zones, whether you use the advanced or expanded rules, etc.

3. Choose sides and send your armies to a moderator.
Use the  AAM units database for units for which you don't have the cards. Alternatively you can use hordelings, bgg, or even better here.
Notice that: The German SS-Panzergrenadiers and the American Ranger units cost 7, instead of 5, along with the other changes introduced with the 1939-1945 set, as described in the official F.A.Q.
When both players have sent their armies, post them in the thread. When the moderator notices the thread, he/she will check to see if the armies are the ones you had chosen.

4. Start playing as in real life. Roll the dice by typing what you see in this box:
Code:
[dice=xd6]
where x is the number of dice. Go here to try it before your first online match. Post your moves by mentioning the name of the unit and the hex it moves to or the unit it fires at.

5. Use image editing software (such as the Gimp, Photoshop or even MS Paint) to make the map at the end of each step or turn. Depending on how fancy you want the map to be, you can either use the actual images of the ships or just type their names inside the sectors. When you make the map, upload it on an image storing website (such as photobucket or imageshack), and post it here by typing:
Code:
[img]location-of-image.jpg[/img]
.
You can follow these instructions if you want to make it look even better.

Be polite to your opponent and patient. This is online-gaming through forum, which means that the players post their moves and map images when they have time.

Have fun.

Hi everyone,
this thread is a tutorial for editing maps with Adobe Photoshop for playing AAM online games on this forum. For informations about how to use the forum to play online games refer to this thread:
http://aaminis.myfastforum.org/about1002.html

I used Photoshop CS (version 8.0) to make the files, you can use more recent version without any problems but I'm not sure about olders versions.

The files can be found compressed into a single zip file here:
http://myfreefilehosting.com/f/804afae828_30.61MB

The tutorial is a bit long but most of the things you'll have to do are simple operations like drag/drop, copy/paste, move, etc... I included everything I could think of to be sure that even someone who has never used photoshop can easily edit the maps.

Here it goes:
Map Making

Using 1 Map
1- Start by choosing a map and open it in photoshop

2- In Photoshop the only windows you will need is the layers (click the window menu on the top of the screen then go to "show layers") and the toolbox (click window show "toolbox" if you don't see it), also photoshop as 3 view modes (almost at the bottom of the toolbox) I recommend to use the normal view mode (left one) when making the map and placing unit so you'll be able to see and move the window of all opened files on screen.

3- Open the file named 1_map_grid.psd, go to Select menu and choose Select All (or simply hit Ctrl+A) then go to the Edit menu and choose Copy (or hit Ctrl+C), close the file 1_map_grid.psd. You should now be on the opened map you choose, go to the Edit menu and choose Paste (or hit Ctrl+V).

4- Open the file named --Objetive.psd, go to Select menu and choose Select All (or simply hit Ctrl+A) then go to the Edit menu and choose Copy (or hit Ctrl+C), close the file. You should now be on the opened map you choose, go to the Edit menu and choose Paste (or hit Ctrl+V). Select the move tool in the toolbox (the arrow on the upper right) and by clicking and dragging move the objetive to it's desired location.

5- Save the file in photoshop format (.psd) with the name of your choice (I suggest naming it with the names of the two players, ex: Gate_vs_ChuckNorris.psd)

Using 2 Maps
1- Start by choosing 2 maps and open them in photoshop

2- In Photoshop the only windows you will need is the layers (click the window menu on the top of the screen then go to "show layers") and the toolbox (click window show "toolbox" if you don't see it), also photoshop as 3 view modes (almost at the bottom of the toolbox) I recommend to use the normal view mode (left one) when making the map and placing unit so you'll be able to see and move the window of all opened files on screen.

3- Go to the window of the map you want to be on the upper part, go to the Image menu and choose Canvas Size, enter 21 in the height field. Below that you'll see 9 squares with the middle one being white, click on the top center one with the upward arrow and click OK. Go to the View menu and choose Fit to screen (or hit Ctrl+0) to see the complete file.

4- Go to the window of the map you want on the bottom part, go to Select menu and choose Select All (or simply hit Ctrl+A) then go to the Edit menu and choose Copy (or hit Ctrl+C), close this file. You should now be on the opened map you choose, go to the Edit menu and choose Paste (or hit Ctrl+V).

5- Select the move tool in the Toolbox window (the arrow on the upper right) and while holding down the Shift key on your keyboard click and drag the newly pasted map to the bottom, it should "snap" to the bottom edge when you'll get near.

6- At the top right of the Layers window there's a small triangle in a circle just below the X used to close windows. Clicking on this triangle will open a menu, choose Flatten image.

7- Open the file named 2_maps_grid.psd, go to Select menu and choose Select All (or simply hit Ctrl+A) then go to the Edit menu and choose Copy (or hit Ctrl+C), close the file 2_maps_grid.psd. You should now be on the opened map you choose, go to the Edit menu and choose Paste (or hit Ctrl+V).

8- Open the file named --Objetive.psd, go to Select menu and choose Select All (or simply hit Ctrl+A) then go to the Edit menu and choose Copy (or hit Ctrl+C), close the file. You should now be on the opened map you choose, go to the Edit menu and choose Paste (or hit Ctrl+V). Select the move tool in the toolbox (the arrow on the upper right) and by clicking and dragging move the objetive to it's desired location.

9- Save the file in photoshop format (.psd) with the name of your choice (I suggest naming it with the names of the two players, ex: Gate_vs_ChuckNorris.psd)

Units Placement

1- Open the unit folder for the first player and select his units (you can select more than 1 if you hold Ctrl on your keyboard while you click on the names)

2- Select the window of the unit you want to place (you can navigate through the opened files in the window menu (you'll see the names of the units at the bottom)), in the layers window you'll see the name of the unit and a small folder icon left to it, click on the folder icon and without releasing the button drag and drop on the map. Photoshop should switch to the map window and in the layers window you should now see the name of the unit on top of the other layers.

3- In the layers window click on the small triangle left of the folder icon to open it and you'll see 3 to 6 layers (depending on unit type) under the one with the unit name and folder icon. The first layer with the T icon is the unit ID (the letter A you see beside the unit picture), if you have more than one identical unit you can change this letter by double-clicking on the T icon typing what you want and hitting Enter/Return on your keyboard. I suggest you also change its name in the layers window by double-clicking on the name. If you have only one unit of this type you can hide the letter A by clicking on the small eye left of the layer with the T icon. When done click again on the small triangle to close the layers folder of the unit.

4- To place the unit select the "move" tool in the toolbox (the one at the top right who looks like an arrow with a cross) and make sure that the layer of the unit you want to move is selected (highlighted in the layers window) then on the map click on the unit picture and move it to its starting hex.

5- To change the vehicle facing arrow click on the small triangle left of the folder icon in the layers window to open the unit folder, select the layer named "facing" hit Ctrl+T on you keyboard, a bounding box will appear around the arrow, place the mouse anywhere outside of the bounding box (your mouse cursor should look like a "double-sided curved arrow") rotate to desired facing and hit enter/return. When done click on the small triangle to close the layers folder of the unit.

6- Repeat steps 2 to 6 for each unit of player 1, then repeat steps 1 to 6 for player 2.

Playing

- To move a unit use the same procedure as step 4 of Units Placement

- To change facing use the same procedure as step 5 of Units Placement

- To put or remove disrupt/damage counters open the unit layers folder by clicking on the triangle left of the folder icon, then by clicking in the far left square beside the disrupt and damage layer you can toggle the visibility of those layers, you'll see a small eye in the square when the layer is visible.

- To remove a destroyed unit select the layer with the unit's name and click on the small trash at the bottom right of the layers window

- When the phase/turn is complete save the psd file then save a copy (File menu, choose save as...), put the number of the phase/turn at the end of the name and select JPEG as the format

- Upload the jpeg file to image hosting website and post it in your game thread
