Post subject: Finally used the Russians

Last night was our WAS game night at the LGS.
Format 100pt Historical
My fleet:
O.R. x2 48pts
Kirov x2 20 pts
Gromski x5 30pts
98 pts total
First time playing the Russians, so it was interesting matches. Only played twice and lost twice, but was in it both games.
First game was against my Father who we invited out and had never played before, so I was teaching as we went.
Set him up with:
Bismark 53 pts
Z20 Karl Galster x2 16pts
U510 x2 22 pts
Ju 87B Stuka 7pts
98 pts
Wanted him to have a basic fleet with a little of everything to learn with.
Match basically went as follows:
Russians lost intiative everyturn which really hurts with the O.R. Both O.R. failed speed rolls the first two turns. The dice gods were not with me. Used high speed run on first turn so all my DD were on the objectives by trun 2 and laid mines (never played a factor). He blew apart my destroyers with subs and Bismark. His plane never was able to fire a shot as it was aborted each turn it came out. I was able to capture 2 objectives and sunk both of his DDs. I lost all my DDs and he had Bismark and 2 510s to contest the last objective vs my 2 O.R.s Again the dice gods were not with me and his Bismark vitaled one O.R. and the subs obliterated the other giving him the victory. I di manage to 3 damage the Bismark during the game, but could not score the last two hits for the win.
2nd game I squared off against one of our young players who used:
Enterprise 25pts
Devastator 9pt
Avenger 14pts
Tennessee 43pts
Barb-12pts
103 Damn! I knew I should have checked him on points!
Again, was able to capture two objectives and mines were a non factor. I was able to cripple Tenessee using the DDs torps and take out the barb.
In the end all I could do was abort his devastators and watch my fleet slip below the waves as again I never won an intiative roll.
I have to admit for all my bellyaching about the Russians being included they were kind of fun in this format and made the games interesting.
The Russians definately need some allied help to give them a flag so they can unmask the BBs guns along with air support.
Most importantly I think we may have converted my father into a new WAS player. _________________ Aaron

Interesting battle report. I think a good match-up would be against the Germans using something historical like:
Schlewig-Holstein x2
Hipper
Koln
Ludeman
T-27
Stuka x2
98 points
O.R. x2 48pts
Kirov x2 20 pts
Gromski x5 30pts
98 points |

one plane is often a guarantee to never get through (except high armor planes vs 5dice), so no wonder the stuka sucked
nice game though.
I am not surprised that the mines did not work, you got the objectives so your opponent did not need to enter those sectors... _________________ [img.]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/db/Animated_gun_turret.gif[/img]

Oh but I did, because the DDs were not the ones that captured any of them after being sent to the bottom by the subs and gunfire. Bismark had to move into the final objective.
Kind o scary moving an O.R. into a mined sector when it only has 4 pull points. _________________ Aaron

Add the De Ruyter to the Soviet fleet to aid their initiative chances. De Ruyter's somewhat better AA can also be important.
Or you can assume that O.R. is one of the battleships that the Dutch wanted to build in the 1910's. Hi Duck!
My Soviet fleet consists of O.R., Kirov, and 6 Gromky. I need my Dutch (De Ruyter, 1 DD, 2 subs) to round out the Soviet fleet. |
