Longer grasses added, much of which is "trampled" has been added, with camel hair. Where grass is tore yp and you can see soil, see the last pic I just added.

Yes, these are sweet. Would like to see if I could do something like this one day, but that is a lot of work for a game I haven't played since last spring.
btw, those are not .22 casings as far as I can tell. _________________ It is enough that the people know there was an election. The people who cast the votes decide nothing. The people who count the votes decide everything.

I think those are little snippets of hollow brass rod. A .22 casing would be ginormous next to that mini.
I love the camo scheme and the crew are top notch as always but I am going to nit pick a little.....I know, PP is the master and he blows me out of the water but there are a couple little things that I would change. The flock (I think you told me once it was dyed wood shavings and you inherited a ton of it, is that right?) looks very unrealistic and is out of scale with the figures. Those blades of grass are like the size of palm fronds in that scale. I think some static grass would make that look a lot better. The other thing is the odd shaped base. I know it is hand made and cut to match the model, but I would prefer a uniform base size, something like the FoW bases. It just looks more 'finished' in my opinion. So now that I am done blaspheming let me just reiterate, the 88 looks great (that rhymes), just a couple of observations on my part.
P.S. The droopy barrel is a bit of a downer too, but as far as AAM barrels go it is pretty good. Nothing you can do about that, that one is on Hasbro. _________________ Nuts! - General Anthony McAuliffe

Those seem like fair observations to me. I requested 'grass' (and no reflection on PP) I'm going with a muddy base from now on. I think if heavy vehicles are towing big guns, positioning, unhooking, setting up, firing, etc. you are more likely going to see mud/dirt in the immediate area because the ground would be churned-up and then flattened down. The irregular base is 'ok' because this mini-diorama typically is placed among trees, behind some shrubs, etc, for more cover. The other thing that is hard to represent and use practically at the same time is realistic looking field grass on a battlefield. In real life AFV and men would tromp down grain fields or waist high weeds no problem, but on a game table you can't really represent that very realistically. I see FOW based units 'riding' the grain field like a surfboard. I also see a lot of battlefields that look like manicured golf course fairways which is really unrealistic. So, I guess it's all a compromise. |

Thats for you NMH? You lucky dog. I love that camo, I was looking at some pics in the latest issue of WI and they had an article on WWI artillery and the camo was ridiculous, just gorgeous looking, and they had some guns painted similar to this 88 with the grey, brown and green. As far as basing goes, I also dislike the golf course look and I have seen the "field surf" before too. There is also the bushy/grassy base sitting in the middle of the cobblestone town square that looks a little silly too, but you can't make a base that matches everything.I tend to make my bases muddy with patchy static grass to kind of reflect the torn up terrain and to avoid the "putting green" look. Here are a couple of pics of a crewed PAK 40 with muddy/grassy base mounted on a FoW base.

Jim,
You're "The Man" when it comes to AAM mods. I don't think you should touch a thing. Also, as I recall the barrel is actually pretty straight on that 88 so I assumed the picture is more of an "illusion of bendy barrel syndrome"
ps - there are new orders and mods to conquer now! |

I reworded my last post a bit. I just woke up, and tend to ramble pointlessly until I have had at least 64 oz of coffee.
I am going to add some upright taller, scruffier brush, and a few strands of long grass, stomped down. But you can actually see dirt in this grass. It isnt as complete a covering as the scan makes it look, mostly because the pic is a bit dark, and you just cant see the bare spots.
The longer grass, like the static grass, should be used in very small amounts, since the main effect of the crew would be to have stepped on most of that grass and flattened it by now.
This one looks fairly well stomped down, really. _________________ painting services available for any kind of minis.

(Ignore the big fat white cat hair that I see now was on the scanner. Its on the glass, not the gun.)
This view better shows the worn and tramped area. The taller grasses I just added with camel hair.
Barrel is actually quite staright. Laying on the glass and the felt over it, flexes the barrel just a little bit, combined with optical illusion makes it just LOOK like a bendy.
