Thanks for doing the legwork for us!

What about a model kit.  Surely there's a cheap one out there, or perhaps this is wishful thinking.

They already have good enough escorts, I think. Milan is the only destroyer I'll ever need for my French fleets, while a New Zealand escort would be much more likely to see play.

EDIT: Nevermind. No River class ships served for New Zealand. HMAS Diamantina is more likely.

The difference between destroyers and frigates has always confused me. If the definition is size (frigates are smaller than destroyers), then why was the River class frigate 1,370 tons and the G class DD's 1,335 tons and the H's 1,340 tons? And that's not even considering the small baltic destroyers. I suppose this is much like the battlecruiser terminology controversy. One man's frigate is another man's destroyer and another man's destroyer escort.

The RCN still needs some love, so I'd like to see a Canadian River Class.

Given that HMAS Diamantina has been preserved as a museum ship, however, my money is on the frigate being Australian.

Then again, the mould for HMCS Haida (museum ship) doubled for HMAS Arunta (bottom of the ocean) ....

I'd be happy to see this one as both Australian and Canadian.

Canada needs the Royal Canadian Naval Air Service, HMCS Uganda and maybe another destroyer. It already has enough sub hunting ability.

i think speed is the deciding factor.

The fundamental difference is that "frigates" and "destroyer escorts" were purpose built ASW platforms designed exclusively to operate as convoy escorts, while "destroyers" were multi-role warships designed to operate in a number of capacities.

R.B. replied that he did not need us to go to that much trouble, but thanked us for the effort. They can figure it out from the photos if need be.

Sounds like WotC is too cheap to buy plans!  Wink

So if anybody wants to relay this to RB, I asked the boys on NavWeaps if they knew of any line drawings of a River Class.

I don't know if this is what you are looking for, but on pg 140 of "British Destroyers & Frigates" there is a drawing of HMS Wye.

It is a nice line drawing.

That's definitely a nice line-drawing, can't ask for too much better.  Nice work Drittal.

Tiornu's book mentions British plans to rearm some Rivers for Pacific work.  For the AA role, 2 twin 4" guns, and for shore bombardment, 6" guns.  I assume it would be a pair of 6" guns fore and aft, replacing the standard 4" guns.

I am guessing the River-class frigate will be a 6 point unit.  Armor and gunnery stats like the Sammy B.  No torpedoes, maybe a lesser AA value, but with the SAs of the Sackville.
