Post subject: HMS Renown?
|
|
|
Given that the HMS Repulse model is actually HMS Renown it can be assumed that the Renown will appear in a future set.
So what can we expect?
I would assume:
Main guns: 14/14/13/11 (as Repulse)
Secondaries: 6/6/5
AA: 8
[EDIT] Torpedoes 2/2/1
Armour 7 - Vital Armour 14. Hull points 5
SA:
Extended range 4.
Expert battlecruiser: +1 main gun dice when shooting at an enemy battlecruiser.
Dive bomber killer: +1 dice when shooting at dive bombers.
Reasoning: Renown's secondaries were powerful - 20 x 4.5-inch with a broadside of 10. The 4.5 was regarded as superior to the 5.25-inch on King George and it is the gun the RN still uses today.
Renown also had a good war as a carrier escort, on one occasion shooting down seven out of 11 Stuka dive bombers.
Renown also had a famous running battle in gale force conditions with Scharnhorst AND Gneisenau and she landed several hits on one including knocking out the enemy's heavily armoured forward turret with a single 4.5-inch shell. The small shell hit the rangefinder optic and blew off the glass, storm water got into the turret's electrics and shorted out the entire A turret.
Renown's deck armour appears to be arranged better that Repulse's, hence the better vital armour figure. _________________ 'Master and Commander'

Interesting.
I had come up with similar secondaries (6/6/4) and AA.
For armor, I had 8 / 13 / 5, though I think I agree with you that 7 / 14 / 5 is more appropriate.
I did not realize the torpedo tubes were removed in refit?
I also had no sa's and slapped a 39 point cost (for +1 AA over repulse and + 1 armor and the juiced-up 2ndaries).
However, swapping the point from armor to vital and removing torpedoes probably drops the cost to more like 36 (sans sa's) |

Unfortunately, I don't think 'Battlecruiser' is a unit 'type' in WAS. So, perhaps an anti-battleship SA is the closest you can get (at least without house-rules). _________________

Mayhaps this should be moved to "custom cards" section?
Or Chestys "reprint reference" topic?
it fits much better there, and it's why we have that sub forum as well. |

You could re-word Cruiser Hunter and Kamikaze Killer for your SA's...
Battleship Hunter - This unit rolls one extra attack die when making Main Gunnery attacks against Battleships.
Dive Bomber Killer - This unit rolls one extra attack die when making Antiair attacks against Dive Bombers. _________________ Repaint Reference...

OK so we refine it to +1 shooting at Scharnhorst type or Kongo type 'cos that's what we are talking about. _________________ 'Master and Commander'

I was not proposing a custom card so much as speculating on what the (eventual) official card would look like. Maybe RB looks in and maybe he takes hints, I don't know.
I remember bashing HMS Warspite on the official boards and, low and behold, the Warspite arrived in set II. Sometimes wishes are granted! smile _________________ 'Master and Commander'

Hope we get something similar to your proposal. I was a little suprised we didn't get Renown before Repulse since, after all, Renown is the one that survived the war.

Repulse first because they made the Prince of Wales in the Set.
(you can now assemble the force Z, and your opponent probably need more Bettys) _________________

HMS Renown had torpedoes at the start of WW2, the same mounts as HMS Repulse. _________________ Darn the Torpedoes; full speed ahead!

You are correct. Conway's says removed April 1945. Another source had claimed otherwise. I will edit my entry.
I am surprised that they were left aboard given the wartime view that above water torpedoes had contributed to the loss of HMS Hood.
Thank you. _________________ 'Master and Commander'
