In keeping with the earlier thread, here's a list of the new plastic makers with links, plus my favorite 'other 28mm' retailers:
Victrix, makers of some killer 28mm Nappies. I've heard they're a little larger than Perries, but haven't seen them inn the flesh so I can't verify.
http://www.victrixlimited.com/
Perries, by whose standard I measure everything else. Their plastics are Nappies and ACW.
http://www.perry-miniatures.com/
Warlord Miniatures, who have an excellent Rome and her enemies line and an ECW line in plastic. They also have Bolt Action Miniatures which is hands down the best in WWII 28mm and carry the other two listed above. exactly the same size as Perries
http://www.warlordgames.co.uk/
Wargames Factory. They do a number of ranges, Earlier Romans and enemies, Vikings, Zulu War, and Zombies (Jessie's favorite). They also have an interesting marketing scheme, check out the Liberty and Union League. I've heard these are a little larger than perries as well, but again I can't verify
http://wargamesfactory.com/Home.htm
Immortal Miniatures, who do a couple of ancient lines that are VERY good. They've got plastic Hoplites coming up.
http://www.immortalminiatures.com/
HAT, a model maker whose gotten into the mini's business. They have French Nappies and Spanish Dark Ages out, with SYW on the way. The quality here is, less than perfect, but they're REALLY cheap. same size as Perries.
http://www.hat.com/current28.html
Old Glory 25s, Makers of all things metal and cheap, with decent quality. They scale OK with Perries, they're a bit bigger but you'll never notice from three feet away.
http://www.oldglory25s.com/
Eureka minis, who carry some really cool and sometimes disturbing stuff, all in metal. (Seriously, check out the teddy bear minis and you'll see.) One from down under that I heartily approve of! Their stuff scales with Perries, though some of the other people's stuff they carry doesn't.

And finally Brigade, who either carry everything else I need, or can show me a company that does. (Shadowforge, drool) They only show what they CARRY of each line, so it's worth checking out the people they stock to see what else they might have. Also all in metal, their WWII-WWI stuff works in the Perries scale, the others vary. (They actually have a 28mm U-Boat!)

Hey Duck,
My son and I are interested in starting up 28mm ancients - Rome and her enemies or Alexander's conquests, etc. Looking online I like Aventine, Warlord, Wargames Factory figures so far. We will probably use the Field of Glory ruleset (I have not read it yet). Do you have recommendations for best manufacturer for good looking, historically accurate minis?
Thanks for any input! |

Depends. Haven't seen Alexandrian plastics yet, but Immortal's on the verge of producing classical hoplites, and Wargames Factory is close as well. Check into WF's Liberty and Union League section, they let you vote on what you'd like to see next. (An innovative marketing strategy, and one I approve of!) For inexpensive metals, I use Old Glory for rank and file then one of the more expensive lines for command, special units and heros.
Plastics are easier for Romans. Wargames Factory are made for FOG, but their line is late republican. For early imperial you're looking at Warlord, which were put out with WAB in mind but they'll work, you'll just need more command stands. I suggest using Old Glory cav with them tho, I'm not a fan of Warlord's metal Roman cav.
All of them are reasonably accurate, less grognards in an ancients setting because we're working off wall carvings and the few surviving paintings which means we have less of an idea what they actually looked like.
If money isn't an issue, then Wargames Foundry is probably the top of the line for minis, at least for ancients. Most of the companies I've listed will work reasonably well with each other. For a general listing of companies I'd suggest this:

Nobody can keep on top of everything that's out there, but I'm insane enough to try. If you have questions about a particular line or how one scales with another let me know. If I don't know I can find out. _________________

The best (and really 28mm scale) miniatures I know for Alexander the Great are Vendel Miniatures.
http://vendelminiatures.co.uk/
For Romans and beyond try Gripping Beast. They have 'polemarch' (Alexander successors) miniatures too.

If you're into Alexander the Great, check out this site.
http://www.ancientbattles.com/index_01_AncientBattles.html
It's the site by the brilliant writer of the Warhammer Ancients 'Alexander the Great' book. Note though that I feel the book is quite biased in favor of Alexander. Persians will have a very hard time competing with them.
Newline miniatures (in the UK) has a good range of figures for this too (note : select the 25/28mm stuff, not the 20mm miniatures)
http://www.newlinedesigns.co.uk/
Black Tree Design had some good miniatures too.
http://www.blacktreedesign.com/home.html
But for rank and file, the Wargamesfactory stuff Duck Crusader proposed is brilliant. Light weight, great to paint. I wish those things were released 8 years ago when I was buying my tons of lead. _________________ There are no desperate situations, there are only desperate people.

Good list, and good companies all. Though a quick warning, Black Tree Design, through no fault of their own but because of reorganization problems, has been really rocky on their mail order in the last year or so in the states. I've heard that they're over their problems, but I only use them for their Zulu war horse and heavy weapons so I haven't ordered from them in awhile. _________________

More goodness! Hat has released some test shots of their Bavarians. Three styles, marching, action, and command. Have to say they look much better to me than some of their earlier efforts, though it's hard to tell with just test shots to look at:
Also good someone's finally doing something besides Brits and French... _________________
