Post subject: Newbie with various army builds
|
|
|
Hey all, first post here!
I just recently cracked open 8 or so boosters along with a starter, and am trying to fit together a decent 100 point army for a fun little tournament over the weekend. Definite allied bias in my packs, so I've got a couple builds based on some of the units I've got currently. Would love to hear some suggestions and/or input on them, since my knowledge of the game is quite basic. Feel free to tell me I'm wayyy off with my army motivation.
Allies 1:
[70pts] 2 x KV-85
[4pts] 1 x M1 Garand Rifle
[14pts] 2 x Hotchkiss MG team
[4pts] 1 x PPSh-41 SMG
[8pts] 2 x Bazooka
=100 pts
I built this in thinking that my opponents would be armor heavy. I'm a big fan of the KV-85, having 6 defense and hulking mass seems like they would make them pesky as well as dangerous. A couple MG teams to hopefully mow down some infantry, along with a ppsh and a couple of bazookas for close range.
Allies 2:
[60pts] 1 x M26 Pershing
[14pts] 2 x Hotchkiss MG team
[21pts] 1 x M4A1 Sherman
[3pts] 1 x PPSh-41 SMG
= 98pts
Getting a Pershing was too tempting not to use. Is it a tad overpriced though? Its clearly a beast, but I don't know if its better to have a KV-85 and a Sherman (I've also got a VC Firefly) and split up the power a bit more.
Axis 1:
[22pts] 1 x Panzer IV Ausf. G
[15pts] 1 x Panzer IV Ausf. E
[13pts] 1 x Panzer III Ausf. F
[6pts] 1 x Finnish Officer
[10pts] 1 x MG 42 Machine-Gun Team
[10pts] 1 x PAK 38 Antitank Gun
[5pts] 1 x Antitank Grenadier
[5pts] 1 x Flammenwerfer 35
[11pts] 1 x SGrW 34 81mm Mortar
[3pts] 1 x Arisaka Rifle
=100pts
As you can see, this is very much a rag tag squad, heh. Nevertheless it contains the pride of my axis forces so far and I wanted to throw one together! Seeing as I don't have anything in heavy armor, I envision this as more of a long range assault build. Using my finnish officer to bolster the defense of my MG/mortar/panzer group, just continue to assault with some close range specialists as needed. No idea if this is anywhere near viable, but the allies are where my money is going to be at anyway.
A couple notable units I'll mention, in case they'd be a better fit somewhere.
Cromwell IV
T-34/76
2 x Valentine VI
M3A5 Lee
Sherman VC Firefly
Junkers JU 87G Stuka
If you've read this all the way through, thanks! I'm just getting into this, but it sounds like a blast to play through and its awesome that such a community exists for the game.

It looks like you're not using the Revised Cards. Given what you have. For the Axis I would use:
[22PT] Panzer IV Ausf. E
[15PT] Panzer IV Ausf. G
[13PT] Panzer III Ausf. F
[10PT] PzKpfw 38t
[6PT] Finnish Officer
[10PT] MG42 Machine Gun Team
[7PT] SS-Panzergrenadier
[5PT] Panzerfaust 30
[5PT] Flammenwerfer 35
[3PT] Romanian Infantry
[3PT] Mauser Kar 98k
[99PT]
It's a little more manueverable without the relocate for the artillery. The Arisaka Rifle is nice. However, their medium range attack is not potent and it can be difficult to get them in Hand to Hand at times. _________________ James 1:17

Thanks for the suggestions! After a closer look at the revised cards I see what you mean, the artillery in particular is quite different from the original. Kind of confusing, I guess I'll have to look through the revised sets more closely and judge accordingly. No idea if the group I'm going to be joining over the weekend plays with them or not though, hehe.
Should be interesting! |

Alright off that bat I can say you're better of without the pershing in 100 point builds.
Shermans are very useful. That firefly will help alot.
The PPSh is useless unless you're defending or you have a transport for it.
Always combo the Red Devil Captain with the Garand and maybe a Hotchkiss.
No matter if you're attacker or defender always use the MG42 and flammenwerfer.
The Panzer IV G and Stuka will be your main punch for axis. I'd definitly use them in every build.
I will try to get some builds with those pieces up later. Those are just pieces of advice. Also, find units you like (the M1 Garand comes to mind) and get lots of em', along with a few extra Red Devils to break into "squads" and I do this: 5 garands 1 Red Devil. _________________ "Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak, Courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen." - Churchill

Thanks for the tips!
Definitely a downside of not having very many boosters open yet is that I don't have multiples of many units (besides 3 Brixia 35mm mortars, woohoo!). I definitely want to get more garands and small infantry in general to fill spots in my armies to come. Hopefully I can pick up some over the weekend.
I have been hearing that Shermans are the way to go as far as points-to-firepower is concerned, I will definitely make use of them as I go. |

Thanks for the info Andreas, I'll check out that scene and maybe pick up a few things I'd like. I see what acs meant about stocking up on some smaller units. A guy let me borrow a couple garands and an eagle-eyed NCO over the weekend. Made my battles at least competitive I just built a basic US army with them, both my shermans, a cromwell, and an antitank gun. I made a lot of beginner mistakes but it was still fun! |

Glad to hear I faced the same issues as you when I started what I did was to buy cheap pieces from miniaturemarket, but I used ebay for most of the stuff. I found two sellers which I liked and had good prices/service and then I just stuck with them. I bought lot's of great packages with different infantry from one of them (which was what he mostly sold) and then bought very cheap vehicles from the other.
I can especially recomend the last guy, my tank pusher, he had his store in Hong Kong (I think) and sold the units without statcards and the shipping was very cheap yet fast (to Denmark anyway), I bought 3 EF T-34/85s for 7$ and shipping was about the same, to further keep the cost down I bought lots of stuff at the same time and he would combine the packages, when they arrived I just had to print out the stat cards from the internet. _________________

Very true, I found miniaturemarket after reading your post and have placed a medium sized order They do come with cards though, correct? I have seen some ebay listings for cardless units, so I will definitely look into that as well. That's some pretty crazy low shipping from hong kong, hopefully it isn't really pricey to Canada!
