Post subject: Admirals and Commanders Draft Scenario 4 Player
|
|
|
I would like to know what you think of this scenario concept. It can be broken up if you just want to do the Admiral/Commander part or if you like the draft idea (and don't have four people.)
Also, this might be a good way to get more people involved in online play that don't have time to play out a full battle, but want to do something. In such case, those with less time could do the draft while the more active members conduct the battle.
Admirals and Commanders Draft Scenario 4 Players
- Players form two teams, each team has an Admiral and a Commander
- Admirals draft and build their fleet.
- Commanders conduct the battle.
- The Admiral and Commander discuss strategy before the game begins.
The Game: Standard map, objectives, 200 points. (or choose your own)
The Draft: Roll a die to determine the Axis and Allies fleets (or choose your own)
1 = Germany/Italy v. UK/France/USSR
2 = Japan v. USA
3 = Germany/Italy v. USA
4 = Japan v. UK/France/USSR
5 = Axis v. Allies
6 = All units available
- Roll a die to decide who picks first in each draft.
- Each Admiral drafts one unit each turn for the first three turns and drafts two units each turn after that.
- A draft example is below:
Japan v. USA
Draft #1: Japan
Turn 1:
Yamamoto selects Soryu
Nimitz selects Shokaku
Turn 2:
Nimitz selects A6M5 Zeke
Yamamoto selects Tone
Turn 3:
Yamamoto selects A6M2 Zeke
Nimitz selects Nagato
Turn 4:
Nimitz selects Akitsuki and Oi
Yamamoto selects Yamashiro and Shigure
Turn 5:
Yamamoto selects I-19 and I-26
Nimitz selects Aoba and Isokaze
Turn 6:
Nimitz selects Shoho and Judy
Yamamoto selects A6M2 Zero Kamikaze and Jill
… and so on until all units are drafted.
Draft #2: USA
Turn 1:
Nimitz selects Barb
Yamamoto selects Atlanta
Turn 2:
Yamamoto selects Archerfish
Nimitz selects San Diego
Turn 3:
Nimitz selects Hellcat
Yamamoto selects Wildcat
Turn 4:
Yamamoto selects Saratoga and Avenger
Nimitz selects Missouri and Iowa
Turn 5:
Nimitz selects Alaska and Massachusettes
Yamamoto selects Washington and Laffey
Turn 6:
Yamamoto selects Baltimore and Fletcher
Nimitz selects Kidd and Cleveland
… and so on until all units are drafted.
- Once both sides are drafted, players will roll a die to determine sides.
- Once both sides are established, the Admirals will build their fleets with the units they drafted. They won't use all the units they drafted and can use multiples of a unit.
- Each Admiral will then consult their Commander to discuss strategy before the game begins.
- When both sides are ready, the battle begins!

So if I understand the drafting example right, both sides help draft ships for each other? _________________

I knew there would be confusion and should try to fix that in the description.
Both sides draft a fleet for both nations. But you only end up using one of the fleets you draft.
For example, if you and I play, we take turns drafting Japanese units. Then we take turns drafting US units. Then we roll to decide sides. If I end up playing the US, I don't use the Japanese fleet I drafted.
Is that more clear?
You don't have to use all the units you draft- those are simply the ones you are allowed to build with. Heck, you might not even use your first draft choice. And you can have multiples of a unit you drafted. |

So each player has input on each side but ultimately only plays one of them. I like that idea. _________________

Yes, it sounds like you get it. I have been considering a draft concept for some time, but since both sides never select fleets from the same group of ships, it would kind of be impossible. This way, you have two drafts, but only use a fleet created from one draft.
There are some variations I have considered, one being that the two teams play two games, where you switch sides after the first game. So in the example above, Nimitz would play the US in game one and Japan in game two. This way you use both fleets you drafted. |

Looks cool! This seams like it might be an interesting scenario to try out at my next game night with my cousins. _________________ -Greyh

| I am looking forward especially to people trying out the Draft system, even if it is just 1 v. 1 game. |

Was thinking about this at work. How many units does each player draft? Up to 200 points approx. each? All available? Or do you pick a set number , e.g 21, units each before stopping the draft?
I only ask cause I have at least one of each unit from each set and wonder where you would set the limit. _________________

I had similar thoughts. Perhaps make a max of 1 Rare, 2 Uncommon, 3 Common (total - not per player). So when a rare is drafted, the other player can't draft it.
or...
Follow historical limits
or...
each unit is unique - except aircraft (we have enough sets now where this isn't an over-crippling effect).
Personally, I like the last. _________________ -Greyh

I like the last choice as well. Give a chance for underused units to make an appearance. Question is again where do you stop? If you take one of each wheres the drafting.
There are 36 Japanese units in the three sets we have. So in a Japan vs. US if your drafting you might end up taking them all. _________________

I would assume you draft to a points cost, so depending on the cost, it might not be an issue. On the flip side though, I'm less worried about the IJN and more worried about two people trying to draft a Regina Marina force.
It numbers/options were an issue, perhaps include two of every DD? That will give a few more tactial options as well - depending on what you were trying to accomplish in the build. _________________ -Greyh

True considering they only have two to choose from I would guess that drafting to 200 points, or close to it, each would be the best.
You can go under by a bit but not over by alot. So if you've drafted 193 points of stuff don't think of taking a BB again as a pick. _________________

There are variations of course. However, you are not going to use all the pieces you draft because I think that would complicate things and make you think more about draft- thus making that part of the game longer. My intended draft description was for the player to draft what he likes or think works well- or at least what he doesn't want his opponent to have. And then after the draft look over you units and build a fleet that works best with what you drafted. You might have drafted a carrier with Expert Torps, but forgot to draft a torp bomber- in which case you might not use the carrier.
Each draft will be unique based on the nation. For the US, which has multiples of everything, you should get each type of unit, but maybe not the type you want. If you opponent drafts the Wildcat, you get the Hellcat. Or your opponent can draft both, leaving you without a fighter. The same goes for the Archerfish and Barb. But with all the capital ship choices, you are going to get a few BB and CVs if you want. And cruisers are abundant too. But I'm sure the Baltimore will get drafted somewhat high and grabbing the Atlanta and San Diego would be a steal too.
As for the smaller nations, that will surely be entirely different drafts. Which is why I included Italy with Germany together. If Germany were by itself, the Bf109 is most likely the #1 pick because not only is it a good fighter, but their only choice.
I would let the draft go all the way to the end. Or until both sides agree to stop. Since there are so many units, after round 5 you'll draft 2 at a time to make it go a bit faster.
I am glad you guys are considering this game style as I think it is a variation that is worth trying a few times once in a while. |

Stormhawk or Greyh Seer-
Would you be interested in an online match to play out the draft scenario idea?
We can choose two sides- I suggest either UK v. Germany or US v. Japan.
OR
We can draft units from any nation have play mixed fleets. I think it would be fun to try the mixed fleets idea. |

| OK, I will start the thread in the online games forum and we'll get at far as we can get. I also am unavailable Saturday and Sunday, so it is fine if the draft and game gets put on hold for a few days here and there. |

To save time when we draft, once we decide sides we could draft one from each. So if we do UK Germany we pick one from each per draft choice. _________________

Also, I started the match in the online forum. so it is there and ready to go. I rolled to see who drafts first. I think I rolled a 6. With a +1 modifier because I am so cool. But a -1 modifier because I am the only one that thinks so. |
