Post subject: Surface ship torp hits.
|
|
|
| Does someone remember the instances where one surface ship got a torpedo hit on another? I´m not talking about torpedoes fired at dead ships just to sink them (like Bismarck), but torpedo hits at moving ships. |

The Battle of Savo Island would be one particularly good example. _________________

| It's my impression that a number of destroyers and cruisers scored torpedo hits in the Mediterranean also, although I'm not a historian and don't have specific examples to hand. I do know that axis torpedo boats inflicted considerable mayhem during operation Pedestal, I believe they hit both transports and escorts, but I'm not sure if MTBs fall within the scope of the original question or not... |

Battle of the Java Sea, many ships of the ABDA alliance (ex. De Ruyter) were sunk due to IJN long lances. _________________

Luca Tarigo would be one example, she sunk a British DD with a torp while defending a convoy. I know that there were plenty of torpedoes fired during the first battle in Narvik Harbor. _________________

Better than that she did it as a dead ship vs a moving ship. Anyway, yes, torps hit in the Med as well. If I had my copy of 'Struggle for the Middle Sea' at hand I'm sure I could name the instances beyond the Battle of Tarigo Convoy.
Interesting fact about Tarigo... the Captain of the ship, who had his leg shot off, was awarded a rather high end medal... the Ensign that did the aiming and firing of the torps, independently as higher officers were out of commission.. not quite as high. |

The Koromoran (spelling may be off) hit the Sydney with a torpedo off western Australia... I don't recall though whether that was the coup de grace or only just one among many blows that put her down. In the end though, the both sank. _________________ Gatling guns?
