Post subject: 14" BB shell bombs aboard the Enterprise
|

|
According to a well respected Pacific War historian, Mr. Mark Horan, at Midway the Enterprise carried AP bombs modified from 14" BB shells. The great weight of the bombs limited the SBD to a radius of 50 miles. Obviously something of a last ditch weapon.
Has anyone else read of this? I have not read this elsewhere, which is not a surprise considering that new information about the Battle of Midway is still being (re-)discovered.
Game-wise, the bombs can be represented by a one-time SA tied to a specific carrier. The dive bombers gain a 14 die bomb attack, but are limited to attacking within a limited range of the carrier. The dive bomber may even get a -1 to armor and vital armor, as I'm sure the planes will be less manueverable. |

Last Ditch Attack - Once per game in the air mission phase you may declare that this unit is using "last ditch attack," if you do this unit may make a 14 dice Bomb attack with a -1 Penalty to Armor. _________________

Well, 50miles would equate to something like 10 sectors or so, so in a standard game adding in something about limiting the range would be a waste of time... but, if you wanted it to be a little more abstract you could change it to allowing the 14 die attack to be on a unit within say 5 or 6 of the carrier, that could be a little interesting. _________________

Five or six squares is pretty 'last ditch' so I'd go with 6 squares in WAS. _________________ 'Master and Commander'
