I've posted a link and a teaser from that link discussign the Royal Navy's Fleet Plan for the expected war in the 1940's.
Very interesting reading.

Post subject: What BB's after Five KGV class and Four Lion class?
I am curious that after the five King George V class and 4-6 Lion class, what would the other seven to nine battleships have been? Vanguard was sort of an afterthought and at the time this program was begun, the characteristics of Yamato were not known?
Most importantly, did this building program take into account war against German, Italy and Japan at the same time? In other words, were some of the eighteen new battleships earmarked for sending to Singapore to provide the "main fleet to Singapore" which Force Z was supposed to be.
I am sure you will get to these and other issues. Hot stuff here, Crystal Eye.
With 18 new battleships to be laid down, five KGV, four Lions and nine others, I would presume the 5 R class and Barham and Malaya would have been scrapped, just to save manpower alone. Along with the four turrets for Vanguard that would have left 32 turrets or eight full eight gun sets for use. That gives eight eight gun ships and a total of seventeen new battleships. Where is that eighth one? Fascinating conjecture! |
