Post subject: Nine Lives for The Splendid Cats

The following is an essay by Avelanche Press President Professor Mike Bennighof, concerning the hypothetical rebuild of the Royal Navy's remaining Lion Class Battlecruisers for service in the Second World War.
It is an entertaining read and anyone who loves the "what if" should give it a look.
As usual, this provides some new material for us modelers to toy with, however for most gamers here, there is a more practical approach to entertaining this "what if". With the release of Flank Speed, Royal Navy players now have access to the HMS Repulse (even if the figure is Renown). So ardent "historical" players maintain that only two of these ships could be fielded in any one battle. However, after reading Dr. Bennighof's essay, one could (in an alternate history universe) make the argument that four of the HMS Repulse units could be fielded by Royal Navy Players... The HMS Repulse, HMS Renown, HMS Lion, and HMS Princess Royal... since a rebuild of the two remaining "Splendid Cats" would most likely have followed a very similar approach to the HMS Renown's.
In any event, I open the debate... enjoy.

What about HMS Tiger? She was the half-sister of Lion and Princess Royal and remained in service longest. She closely resembled the Kongo and there are a variety of stories - not all true - that the design of one influenced the other, etc. They were on the stocks and building in the UK at about the same time.
Of all the Splendid Cats Tiger would have been the best candidate for a rebuild as she lacked the central magazine making her power plant arrangements better thought out. _________________ 'Master and Commander'

I think they would have been valuable as carrier escorts. The R-class ships were more of a liability because of their speed in WWII than an asset. I think the Kongo's are proof of this. _________________

Well I guess you could certainly make that argument. Strictly speaking though, the HMS Tiger was not deleted at the Washington Naval Limitations Treaty. So of all the "Cats" she did serve the longest. She soldiered on until 1931-1932 when she was finally "retired". This, sort-of, reinforces the point that the HMS Lion and HMS Princess Royal would have been scrapped no matter IF they had survived. Tiger was intended as a sister of the Lion, but, was recast taking the innovative design trends introduced into Kongo to account. As such, you make the important point... she was the best of all the "Splendid Cat" Battle Cruisers. Still, the Royal Navy made no attempt to keep her, and she quickly followed the remaining Iron Duke Battleships to the breakers. HMS Iron Duke herself being the sole survivor, serving in a training role very similar to the USS Wyoming AG-17.
In any event, Like the HMS Lion and HMS Princess Royal, it sure is fun to think of a refit-regunned HMS Tiger escorting the carriers in WW2. _________________ Mutants For Nukes! |

That would be an interesting scenario. Does one or more of these refitted ships hold of Scharnhorst and Gniesenau long enough for Glorious to escape? _________________
