Post subject: Helldiver on US carriers.

What US carriers were able to operate the Helldiver? I was trying to see if the Helldiver was limited to the Essex class but couldn´t find the info quickly enough.
Thanks in advance. |

Someone can check me on this, but I do not believe there were any restrictions based on the carriers....at least not the fleet carriers.
I believe I saw an interview with a USS Enterprise (CV6) pilot discussing the transition to the Helldiver and how the pilots did not really care for them over the SBDs. _________________ Aaron

Same for Hellcats, CVE´s carry Wildcats throughout the war. _________________

But then again the CVL's and CVE's did operate Avengers didn't they. Seems like they're just as large as Helldivers, right? Was there some other reason besides size that they didn't put the Helldivers on the little carriers (take of length/speed, or just doctrine)? _________________

My SWAG (simple wild a$$ guess):
Quantity of Helldivers available(outfit the fleet carriers first)
Perfectly good serviceable wildcats
CVE/CVLs provided more of an escort role with limited squadron space so the dual purpose Avenger makes more sense.
Someone can correct me if my thinking is amiss. _________________ Aaron

Avenger was a "cooler ship"--lower stall-speed. And the Sangamon and Commencement Bay CVE's did carry Hellcats...
Also, once it's on-deck and wings folded, the Avenger is actually a bit smaller: the Grumman wing-fold made it possible to stick a complete plane in about the same space as the fuselage of a disassembled one.
Also, by mid- to late-'43 CVE's and CVL's weren't operating dive-bombers of any kind, period (early ships did briefly operate Dauntlesses, but it was found the Avenger had more "bang for the buck" in that environment. _________________ <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

My information for not operating hellcats from CVE is that the engine torque
was the main problem while landing on the narrow flight deck of an CVE. _________________

Not entirely true. Sangamons weren't much wider than Bogues and regularly took 'em... and the Brits flew similar-torqued Corsairs off their Bogues.
Helldivers, even if they fit with wings folded, were too big to operate more than a few and came in too hot to be reliably safe in landing on such a small deck. Corsairs weren't a lot better, but just enough so to be considered "acceptable risk". _________________ <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
