| Do the -1's from Fighter Director and Escort stack to make -2 on each dice, or not? |

They have different names, so they would stack. 6's would still count as two successes, though. _________________

There is something that I do not like very much about Fighter Director, I was thinking about this last night.
I'm playing the IJN and I lost initiative. During my Air Defense Phase my A6M5 destroys a Hellcat and a face down Destroyed marker is placed near it. During my opponent's Air Defense Phase his Hellcat (which I destroyed) gets at least 6 successes against my A6M5 and there is an Alaska within 3 sectors. My opponent now gets to move that Hellcat out of the sector it was destroyed in and make another AA attack in an adjacent sector. At the end of the phase the marker is turned over and the Hellcat is finally removed from the game.
Another "hole" as I see it is when I win initiative. The Hellcat scores 9 successes against my A6M5 and then uses Alaska to move it again. During my Air Defense Phase there is no longer a Hellcat for my destroyed A6M5 to shoot at.
The first example moves destroyed aircraft around and the second saves a fighter from being shot back at.

I've been thinking about these also, and you're right, it's pretty weird. It would make the most sense if they inserted some wording about timing, like "between the air defense and air attack phases" or something. _________________

I agree, that is an awkwardness in the rules that probably needs a clarification. _________________

I wonder if that's the "big question" WotC_Huscarl mentioned he was surprised that it wasn't asked. I originally (mis)read the card, in my own mind adding in "at the end of the air attack phase" so it didn't occur to me that you could pull your plane out of danger.
I was worried about the Hellcat getting Expert2 from the Yorktown and having 3-4 Alaska's pingpong it back at forth between a couple sectors at 10+ dice of AA, wiping out several air units per turn. This other issue you brought up is a lot worse.
I don't know how they're going to handle multiple -1s. Up until now I was thinking it was going to simply stack, but then I got to thinking about how they handle crippled BB mains vs destroyers, using only the worst penalty instead of combining them.
For example, a crippled ship that the Soryu is "Surprise Raid"ing firing at an aircraft that a Ju88 is "Dividing the Defense" at night. Is that a -4 penalty? I think I'll tack both of those onto that big question list I posted "over there". |
