Umm...wow. So does anyone have any experience with the original Victory at Sea or is this new for everyone? What does this do for us or to us and who's gonna go out and find a copy to review for us? _________________

My finances and this frigging economy disallow my purchasing this at this time, but it does look interesting. _________________ Gaming for 36 Years.

You and me both lothar. Any money I do have for games at this point is going into Flames of War so I won't be getting into this any time soon. _________________

I'm sticking with lothar's version. Trust me it will be a whole lot better if it is anything like VaS. Total dicefest more time looking in a rule book, measuring than actually playing the game.
There is a reason Mongoose had cut production of so many games and say they will return with a new rule book.
I just gave you the hint, they suck donkey ass. Starship troopers total disappointment. _________________ Always Flying. Always Fighting. RIP JIMMY.

I have played Victory At Sea several times. I did not like it very much. The General Quarters 3 game is a better game for those seeking more complexity. I play both GQ3 and War@Sea.
But I won't play V@A because it is not a very good game... _________________ Darn the Torpedoes; full speed ahead!

I'm the opposite - GQ3 is too complicated and extremely table and template heavy.
WaS is a simple rule set.
VaS, after the expansion that fixed the rules, is a better mix between wanting a simple game and a over complex game.
I feel that gamers are more than 'casual' (ie WaS) and grognards (GQ3 for eg).
After a couple of small to medium games - there's no need to look at the rules - they are as complex as the WH40K and Battlefleet Gothic games - after a slight learning curve, the rules mesh quite nicely.

I managed to get my hands on a pre-publication version of Age of Dreadnoughts. I've only glanced over it so far, but so far the main differences between it and VaS are the enhanced ranges of firing arcs (there are ~10 of them now, as opposed to 4 in WWII), and formation rules (which I'm really excited about).
Looking forward to playing this with my friend who plays VaS sometime soon. _________________ I have to make a new sig because my old one is too wide for this new look... |

I use Clash of Dreadnoughts a new set of rules with extensive data on the RN & KM ships. Easy to play in basic mode. Has optional rules which are quite good and dont slow the game down much. _________________ FEAR GOD AND DREAD NOUGHT |

After spending a decent amount of time playing AoD I must say that I am a fan. The system plays just as well as VaS does, while allowing for differences (fire direction, etc.). I do not find it to be a dice fest any more than a game NEEDS to be. The only thing I am disappointed with is the lack of data on ships. Only a few fleets are covered (German, British, Turkish and American BATTLESHIPS only). I know they covered the major bases but $30 for a skimpy rulebook is lame.
Next on my list is testing out the copy of "Fear God and Dread Nought" I purchased at the LGS. |

I just finished the Battle of Heligoland Bight at another LGS using these rules. Over the course of 3 days @ ~7 hours each, we played from 4:30 AM game time until 9:00 AM game time.
What I am trying to say is that those rules are EXTREMELY complex, with lots of looking at tables and rolling dice for different types of damage and such. I had a lot of fun playing it, but that might not apply to all people. _________________ I have to make a new sig because my old one is too wide for this new look... |

FWIW, I did pick up a copy of VaS and AoD while I was gone. Read VaS and it seems very payable once you get the system down. From what I read so far of AoD it appears this forum may be re-inventiing the wheel.
Some very good ideas that could just be simple mods to AoD if you lost the maps or add maps to AoD.
What I discovered while reading VaS was that many of the changes I made with my WAS large map houserules were in many ways similar to VaS. _________________ Aaron

I bought the PDF version of the rule book.
Pretty nice set of rules. Though they had some many detailed rules where it bogs down the game a bit.
More time spent checking for game factors than moving and attacking. _________________ Always Flying. Always Fighting. RIP JIMMY.
