Hans-Joachim Marseille (1919-1942)
------------------------
Marseille started off his career very slowly with less victories than friendly aircraft lost, but thanks to his self-training program he became the most spectacular fighter pilot of his era. He avoided sunglasses and drinking, so as to adapt his eyes and body to the conditions of the North African desert. He worked endlessly strengthening his muscles to sustain higher G-Force and practiced aerobatics. When he returned from a sortie he would always practice marksmanship with his unused ammunition and then he would read as much intelligence information as possible to better understand his enemy. He chose to fight alone with one wingman, because he realised that in the desert large formations are n visual disadvantage against small highly manoeuvrable aircraft. His preferred method of attack was a seemingly impossible high-angle deflection shot from point blank range. On 1 September 1942, Marseille claimed 17 enemy fighters shot down, which earned him the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords, and Diamonds. He was killed 29 days later in a bail-out accident, when an engine failure forced him to abandon his aircraft. In only 382 sorties, he scored a staggering 158 victories.
