Post subject: Project- Battle of Caen Reply with quote
Well, I set out to do a scenario based on the Battle for Caen, a pivitol moment in WWII History.  I've been struggling with this for some time now because I can't incoporate the whole battle into one sceanrio.

It appears that there were 10 different operations including almost every nation that landed on Normandy.  I have decided to break this down into a series of smaller scenarios about 150-200 points each rather than a 400-500 pt all out battle.

I would love anyone's assistance with unit make ups, equipment TOE for the various units on both sides etc so I can simulate this as close as possible.

Any links for research would be apprciated as well.

I will begin with:
Operation Perch
Battle of Le Mesnil-Patry
Operation Martlet
Operation Epsom
Operation Windsor
Operation Charnwood
Operation Jupiter
Operation Goodwood
Operation Spring
Operation Cobra

Anything I'm missing?

Thanks
Snippersly
PS- I hope to have the first operation completed by the first week of May.

Cobra was the US operation that coincided with the push on Caen by Montgomery. The Caen sector was the region closest to where the UK forces landed at Normundy with Sword beach (British) and Juno beach (Canadian) being the closest to Caen.

If you can find it you should check out the Memoir '44 Campaign Book Vol. 1. This just came out as a series of scenarios linked into campaigns for Memoir '44. One of the campaign series is a group of 4 linked campaigns each containing 3-4 scenarios that cover The British and Canadian drive on Caen. You might get some nice ideas from this. If you can find it in a game store maybe just look it over. The scenarios have a historical background section that covers the events leading up to the battle depicted in the scenario. At a minimum you could find out which units fought in which operations and some of the key objectives.

Sounds ambitious and a lot of fun.  Just to be sure, are you planning to render these operations as single scenarios, or are you going to pick out specific actions from each operation and recreate them?

I'm not too familliar with Memoir 44.  I've seen the game, and the price tag and shyed away for now.  I'll see what I can dig up though, sounds like it might be a good reference.

I was planning to make each operation a single 200 point scenario and when combined, it would be the whole camaign.  That way each scenario or each operation can be a bit unique and maybe reflect some special events that occurred there.

For some reason I keep getting over time rolled onto me and with the way $$ is right now, I'm jumping at it.  Instaed of having a couple days off this week, I'm down to 1... so I'll see if I can stick to my pace of creation without sacrificing quality.

Anyway, thanks for the ideas and help.  Anything else comes up, please post it.

Just a quick note for anyone interested. That campaign book for Memoir '44 also has two other campaign series each with about 15 scenarios that are linked together. One covers the initial invasion of Belgium and France in the early war. It might be particularly interesting with the upcoming set. There is also a campaign that covers a large portion of Barbarossa.

As for the price tag, I've spent WAY more on AAM than I ever would on Memoir '44. It's a decent light game.

I say take your time.  Scenarios that you take time to playtest an dream up creative ways to play will be far more enjoyable and rewarding.  I'm working far more these days then a I ever was, which has shot my scenario creating pace in the leg, so I focus more on my modding duties.  That means I'll take time to play all of your scenarios, so I'm really looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

As for condensing whole operations, that should make your job a little easier.  A tactical scenario that abstracts a broader strategic operation should try to capture the flavour of what was happening a that time.  Say for Operation Epsom you could have a scenario where you try to get UK units across a river and score points based on how many get across.  For Perch you could have forces trying to surround a German controlled town while German reinforcements try to push back the pincers.  For 200 pts don't feel the need to stick a strict OOB, just try to include units that were present.  SS, Tigers, Panthers, Cromwells (Maybe proxy a card for a Centaur variant) ect.

200 Points is not a hard and fast number.  For attack and defend games, the attacker usually gets 25-50 more points, since defending is easier.

Having historical units present is a huge issue for me.  If they had a king tiger at the battle, I want one in the game.  If I hav to make custom cards, I will, I have a great template now.

Anyway, I think I will slow my pacing a bit and play test prior to posting.  Since we game once a week, it shouldnt be too hard to get these tested.

Standby for progress! - Heck, if anyone wants to take an operation and do one we can make it a forumini scenario project.  I dont have to be greedy and take all the credit...lol

Let me know.
