This is to suggest inclusion of the Panzerjaeger I ("tank hunter" I) in Forumini Armies. This unit is important in early war scenarios in France.
This unit was a Skoda 47mm Pak L/43 anti-tank gun mounted on a converted Panzer I Ausf. B chassis. First used in France in 1940.
armament: 47mm PaK

Armor Thickness (mm) 14.51
Hull Front, Upper 13@22°2
Hull Front, Lower 13@27°2
Hull Sides, Upper 13@22°2
Hull Sides, Lower 13@0°2
Hull Rear 13@0°2 & 13@17°2
Hull Top 6@90°2

Special abilities:
Fixed Howitzer: this unit may only fire on targets in front of it.
High gear 2: if entire move is made on a road, may move up to 4 hexes.
Open back: Enemy units can use their anti-soldier attack values when attacking this unit from behind, but unit's defense rises to 3. _________________ HHRgamer

Ah, I love that unit. Used a lot of those in Panzer General (version 1), as they were dirt cheap and not too bad in combat (until 1941 or so).
Belgium had comparable tank destroyers (Hotchkiss tank? with a shielded 47mm bolted on top if I remember right) in 1940. _________________ There are no desperate situations, there are only desperate people.

Belgium used their T-13 tank destroyer (in fact an artillery tractor Vickers-Carden-Loyd with an armored hull and a belgian 47mm SA-FRC 1932 /L33.6 gun)

Three models :
*T-13 B1 -> 35 built with a 47mm gun mounted on a "semi-turret" (shielding on a side, open of the other)
*T-13 B2 -> 21 built. Only few differences (hook for trailer, back mud-guards)
*T-13 B3 -> order of 358 specimens, 150 built. New turret which allowed to fire on 360° (On B1 and B2, the panels of shielding needed to be lowered to fire forwards)
T.13 were developed as tank destroyers, but used as battle tanks because Belgian Army hasn't got enough.
Their performances were unsatisfying because of the weakness of the armour (9 mm maximum), in spite of their excellent gun of 47mm which could destroy easily all German tanks in 1940. _________________ A cœur vaillant, rien d'impossible |

Raevski:
According to "Intelligence Briefing on the Early War German Army (1939-41)" (Battlefront Miniatures, Ltd) (version 2.1, 11 February 2009) http://198.106.175.129/ewlists/ewgerman.pdf, this unit was quite effective:
Before the invasion of France in 1940, the German High Command was well aware that the heavy French tanks would be very difficult to knock out with the standard antitank gun – the 3.7cm Pak 36. A temporary solution was devised by placing a Czech-designed 4.7cm anti-tank gun on the hull of a Panzer I tank. The turret of the tank was removed and the gun mounted in a limited-traverse mount with a gun-shield to protect the crew. The resulting vehicle was called the 4.7cm PaK(t) (Sf) auf Panzerkampfwagen I Ausf B, or Panzerjäger I.
For an interim solution the Panzerjäger I (which means tank-hunter) was a remarkable success. The 4.7cm gun was capable of penetrating most enemy tanks and the vehicle was able to get into firing positions and out of trouble again in a way that no towed anti-tank gun could ever do. The 521st, 616th, 643rd and 670th Tank Hunter Groups used this vehicle in France.
I have added suggested special abilities to the initial post above. Does anyone feel like doing FA stats for this unit based on that post and the info here on battlefield effectivenss? _________________ HHRgamer |
