Post subject: Forumini'09 Creativity: Challenge #2 of 10
|
|
|
Make a scratchbuild or structural modification of official AAM or WAS miniature.
This is probably the most difficult of all creativity challenges. You'll have to make a new scratchbuilt or mod and show how you made it in 4 photos (one with the "components", two half-way building it, and one with the final painted product). The end result is as important as the process for the viewers, so please abide by the 4-photo rule; if you can't, that's alright, but it will probably put you in a disadvantage.
It must be in the same scale as AAM or WAS and must not be simply a repaint or a model made out of a kit. There will be different creativity challenges for such entries. This competition is only for scratchbuilds or official AAM/WAS minis that got noticeable structural modifications.
Also, it must be new work, not something that you have shown before.
Post your entries in this thread.
Deadline: Sunday 29/3, 23.59 Pacific Time.
After the deadline, we will vote for the winners. The scores for every creativity challenge is:
1st 10 pts, 2nd 8, 3rd 7, 4th 6, 5th 4, 6th 3, 7th 2, 8th 1
YOU MUST NOT COMMENT ON ANY OF THESE ENTRIES before the deadline.
Post here only your entries or clarification questions. Not comments. _________________

Post subject: Q / Cam Ship
|
|
|
Here is my entry: A Q- Ship / Cam Ship for a coveoy scenario for War at Sea. The plane and catapult came from a Karlshue and the guns I cut from an Akisuki destroyer.
After clipping the sanding the convoy ship I glued the pieces in place, primed it and painted it. I'll have to dig up photos of the conversion, but for now here is the finished product. It was a simple couple hour coversion and for my first attempt at modifying anything...I'm happy with it.
(Thanks to Siesen too, for encouraging me to try and build/modify ships)

***edit: I missed the 4 pic rule, so I have edited my post! I am now only one pic over with a video for evidence of turning casemates. Sorry ND***
Ok, enough waiting! If anybody wants to copy me, so be it! This was a week long labor of love that turned out pretty cool.
USS New York scratch build. I used 40mm gun tubs and 20mm mounts from a Jean Bart and a Kingfisher from a MO. Everything else was from scratch. I hope you enjoy my submission.
Workup pic: The hull is done, with the moveable casemates temporarily mounted for test fitting.
applying the base coat
Now in these next pics, please note the position of the 14" mains and the 5" casemates. That's right, THEY ALL TURN!!!! You can also see the scratch built FD radar on the bridge and aft mast, the FC radar on the aft mast, and the directors on the back side of the bridge.

Now, in this next pic please note the added float and propeller to the kingfisher...
Now for you disbeleivers, her is a video to show the guns being trained...

Post subject: Flakpanzer IV 3.7cm "Mobelwagen"
|
|
|
It looks like I am bringing a tank to Naval battle, but here it goes. It is tough sticking to the 4 photo rule, I hope I picked a photo that does it justice.
My components:
1) NA PZIV Ausf. E
2) EF Entrenched Anti Tank Gun and its AAM card
3) Assorted glues, paints and bits from the parts box.
Here it is in the process of boxing in the superstructure and freeing the gun from its base.
Here it is with the sides built, the AT gun was flipped over, the recoil dampener was trimmed and the gun shield was squared up then additional shields from card were glued on. I cut out card triangles and glued them on to simulate the folding armor plates for when the sides were lowered and I added hinges on the sides made from metal wire. You can also see a bit of spare track glued to the front, an ammo box by the gun and a pack on the rear deck that I added from a FOW stowage kit.
Then here it is in all its glory. Flakpanzer IV 3.7cm "Mobelwagen" I posed it next to an unaltered Ausf. E so you can see the differences (other than the obvious enormous box instead of a turret!). Tamiya Dark Yellow base coat, then green/reddish brown camo added. Shading varnish, decals and dull coat to finish it up. I hope you like my "Furniture Van"!

My entry: the MARESAL Tank Hunter M06
About: The Marshal Tank Destroyer was a Romanian Project from 1943. It had 6 prototypes in its development phase, first 4 of them being tested before the Hetzer appeared. Romanian sources state that in January 1944 a German delegation came to see the prototype M05 and even tested it. The conclusions were very positive and probably (I would go for "granted") some solutions of the Maresal were incorporated into the Hetzer. The Maresal tank destroyer never made it into production, middle 1944 Romania retiring from the Axis side.
The M06 prototype:
Technology: it was a “turtle-shaped” vehicle, very low profile (lower than the Hetzer), lighter (almost half the weight of the German vehicle), having a fixed turret with a 75mm Romanian AT gun (Resita) and 2 men crew. It was more or less a “soft-skin” vehicle, German experts that tested it evaluated its protection good enough only against small arms and soviet AT rifles. It was intended to be a hit and run vehicle, very fast and with passable off-road capabilities.
First 5 prototypes had soviet T60 chassis and tracks (from captured equipment), but for the M06 seems that the 38(t) chassis had been chosen (see above photo).
The model: Starting point was its famous big brother, the Hetzer.
Making a Maresal from a v1 Hetzer has at least one positive thing for the V2 player as myself: the Maresal will emerge in V2 scale!
A small description of the work done:
- Removed the fixed turret and the gun of the Hetzer, also scraped the top of all things present.
- Re-modeled the initial gun and positioned it in a central position, but lower in the front of the vehicle. The part where initially the Hetzer gun was placed was filled with melted plastic.
- Parts of the bodywork from the front of the Hetzer were cut off (above the tracks).
- On the top side of the tank I placed a Stalwart Lt as part of the crew - created a small open hatch. Added a top MG made from Japanese AT Rifle.
- Added on the back side two external fuel barrels (taken from a Fuel Depot), like some T34 had. Also on the back-side was added a spare track wheel modeled from an English Entrenched AT Gun and a blanket roll. From the same piece I’ve took the sandbags present on the front of the Maresal.
- Added a shovel on one of the lateral sides. From my EF Panther barrel I made 3 tree trunks present on the other lateral side of the Maresal along with a towing cable (the Panther was refitted with a proper barrel). The tree trunks have ropes that fix them to the tank. Ropes and towing cable are made from a thin plastic fiber.
- A small headlight was placed on the frontal sloped armor, besides the sandbags who also have ropes that fix them to the tank.
- Base color: metallic grey. Repainted the Crew member, sandbags, added a few touches here and there. Placed Romanian decals (sign, flag, number).
The Card: I did not have time to make a proper card (soon to come) but here are the values that imo fit the M06:
Cost: 18 pt
Year 1944
Speed 4
Def: 3/2
AV: 15/13/11
AI: 5/-/-
Hard to Spot
No Turret
Strike Fade 1 _________________ Custom AAM Maps & Counters here
