Post subject: Battle of Dakar 1940  Reply with quote   (Liked by:0)  Like this post
I'm going to try and put on a game based on the Battle of Spartivento at our next club games day.  I've already got all the miniatures I need for this game on hand and figured out the cards I was going to use to proxy for ships that don't have them.

So, since I have that scenario all covered I figured it was time to start planning for the next time!  In keeping with my Mediterranean theme I thought I would try the British vs Vishy French Battle of Dakar (September 1940).

I'm working off this OOB done by Tony DiGiulian..  I've got about half the list figured out as far as ship proxies and cards, but I was hoping for some input from the more knowledgeable in the forum.

French:
There are several "Auxiliary Cruisers" in the French list.  I was going to use the German Atlantis miniature and cards for all of these, unless someone has another suggestion?

The "Aviso" type ships are giving me a bit of a problem.  I was tentatively thinking of the HWM Swale for the Commandant Rivière class ships and the Vasilissa Olga for the Bougainville-class ships.  Does this sound like a reasonable approximation?  Any better suggestions?

As it stands now, it looks like the French are going to be about 10% behind the British in points. I was thinking of adding a few shore based aircraft to the French side to even things up a bit, but I'm not sure what is appropriate for that time and location?

British:
The British Carrier is listed as being equipped with Swordfish and Skua aircraft.  I'm assuming at this date the Swordfish would be Mk.I models?  Any suggestions to represent the Skua fighter/bomber?

The British fleet has a whole slew of various classes of destroyers in their list.  I was thinking to use the Vasilissa Olga miniature again for all these, with Electra card for the three E-class ships, the Glowworm for the two G-class ships, and the Vasilissa Olga card for the F- and I-class ships.  Are there any better choices for either miniatures or cards?

Thanks for any suggestions on building these two fleets, or running the Dakar scenario in general!

Note that the Skua is represented in-game.

Use the Prince david card for the AMC, rather than thr disguised units, or nordmark

I would probably use swales for both sets of avisios as they weren't equipped witg torps

Thanks for the suggestions!  For some reason I never considered the Prince David or the Nordmark.  The point about the Avisios is a good one, too!

Lastly, yes the Olga can proxy for the F and I class.

As an alternative, use the German ZG3

I was thinking more in terms of the LeO 451 or CAMS 141 Antares.  Were those not present in the Med in late 1940?

The CAMS was still in the prototype stage, leos a maybe. Im pretty sure that a skua was downed by 152s.
The FAS provides an ability to give fighters a stronger strafe attack, clukd be an option

You can use the the forward air strip to turn basic fighters inti light bombers

Looking at the card for the CAMS, it says the prototype was transferred to Dakar in September 1940 and actively supported the Richelieu against the British.   It does sound like there was only ever one there.

The LeO card only talks about use in Belgium early and that the Vichy French continued to use them but no further details.

Sound like it might make sense to include a flight of them, then!

Now I just need to figure out what miniatures to use to represent these.   Confused

The Sea Hurricane is a good proxy model for the Skua.

The Electra card is the AA version of the destroyer. I think at this early stage of the war the Brit DD's were still torpedo oriented. The V. Olga and Gloworm cards are the closest.

V. Olga/ZG3 models are the best proxy for G/H/I classes.
St. Laurent model is the best proxy for C/D/E/F classes.
Witte de With model is the best proxy for A/B classes.

It is one of my greatest disappointments that we don't have a more vanilla early WW2 Brit DD A-I class. The Gloworm is the closest, but the RAM SA is useless and very specialised.

All the best with your scenario.
