** checking the agenda **

If we're talking about weekends, 6, 12 and 13 december are good for me (not having looked at januari yet).

12 Dec seems alright with me. Nothing planned yet. Barentz sea seems a perfect scenario.  Very Happy

At your place, Eccles? What time?

Do you have all the stuff needed for the scenario, ships and battlestations?

I might be a bit short on 'O' class destroyers, but I think I might find some proxies for those. If I'm anything short I'll let you know.

13:30 at my place? I think an afternoon should be plenty of time?

Eccles, i think i have some O-class proxies available, so no need to worry about that. 13:30 sounds fine for me Smile

It is set then  Very Happy

Am I right when I find that WaS doesn't harbour any 'O' class destroyers? Such a shame  Embarassed

I think HMS Javelin can be used as proxy - at least when we're using ships at WaS scale.
Got enough of those Confused

Will we be playing with some sort of Darkness rules? Barents Sea was fought during the perpetual polar night.

I have darkness rules in the set, so we might give them a whirl. I've got enough J,K,N class DDs if those are the closest proxies.

Furthermore you guys could bring your trade stuff, I painted up some extra ships without base, amoung which a warspite for trade  Cool

W@S has no O-class DD's indeed, the Saumarez is a good proxy for them.

I do need to get some new pieces up for my fleet, I've got a Jamaica, 2x Flower corvettes and a Halcyon class minesweeper on my desk waiting for their bases to arrive Smile

I also need to rewrite my gunnery rules after making some small alterations that will speed up the procedure of making gunnery rolls a lot. Very Happy

I'll mainly need planes, carriers and small ships like DD's, DE's etc.

Working hard on getting the missing ships painted for the scenario (Flower class corvettes are SMALL), maybe going to build some arctic terrain and paint up some more tradestock Very Happy

Almost finished in revising the rules to include my improvements to the gunnery sequence which you guys will be testing Smile Looking forward to our game!

2 weeks ago we played the agreed upon game of Naval War. The AAR can be found here:

- Battle of the Barents Sea, 31 december 1942 (<= link)

About Ecclesiastes' Naval War ruleset:

The current version of Naval War (NW) perfectly rides the thin line between simulation and game, IMO. Compared to the much more gamey W@S, the following notes can be made:

pros:

- NW isn't just about finding the optimal range between ships (as in WaS); actual maneuvering is at the center of the game. Crossing the 'T', broadside, positioning for firing torpedoes - or for evasion, it's all to be found in NW. Oh, and there's smoke too.

- gamey aspects are still present, for instance in the nation-specific battle stations (=commands available to the different fleets), but are not dominant. Compared to the earlier versions of NW, the command stations allow for more freedom, which is good.

- although we didn't play with aircraft in our scenario for historical reasons, rules for air are included. All I can say is that air will play a more restricted role in NW compared to W@S.

- the rules for submarines lean heavily on EK's house rules for hidden subs in W@S. In NW they seem to work quite right, allowing for some subtle cat-and-mouse play between subs and subhunters.

- when being hit, not only is damage applied to the hull, but also lots of intricate ship subsystems can get damaged, each with their own special game effects. This is exactly what I liked about Battletech, so I was glad to discover this in NW too.

cons:

- the cost of all this is... time. Games of NW just will take more of your time than W@S will. The scenario we played took some three hours, and we still had the majority of ships riding the waves in pristine condition.
On NW's defense, you can say that with more experienced players (Pen and I only played an earlier version of the game once before), and without night/darkness rules, gameplay will speed up. Then again, I don't know what adding aircraft will do to play time. Lethality of air will be decisive in this.

- torpedo firing is somewhat fiddly. Upon firing, markers are placed. At resolution, larger markers, each with three different firing lanes, are added to the earlier markers. With a 'certain type of player', I imagine there's bound to be some discussion about actual placement, # of hits, etc. Here NW crosses the line from game into simulation territory. I hope Eccles' will think up a system that's somewhat easier to handle. Something with just angle, range and a roll of one or two dice.
In the end, when they do hit, torpedoes are very deadly indeed, touching the right balance compared to the main and secondary gun systems. Kudos for that !

All in all, I found Naval War a very enjoyable and immersive system. Taking more of your precious time, it returns you with a game that oozes with naval experience, granting the feel of having commanded a WW2 fleet. I'm looking forward to see and play the finished version.

Thanks for your review Toyama. It's very interesting to see the game contrasted to the  WaS rules.

Still the NW game itself is much more abstracted and simple than most other naval rulesets out there Smile

Hello all,

On the 25th of November, my newest version of Naval War will be released.

In addition to that, the new website has also come online this week for everyone to check out at www.naval-war.com

Alas this means that the old forum will be abandoned shortly as it was not compatible with a website. This means that everyone who registered at the old forum will need to re-register at the new website.

To celebrate (and to compensate for the trouble of re-registering), the excellent people at Topside miniatures have offered a 15% discount coupon for everyone who registers on the new website up till 5 december!
