I agree with everything everybody is saying (except for Solo) but I've learnt to look at W@S as a Naval Chess game.

Chess is an abstract game. When was the last time you saw a Knight mounted on a horse jump over a castle?
Is it realistic? No
Is it abstract? Yes
Is Chess any less of a game because of it? No

W@S is an abstract KISS naval game and the most important thing is that it works. Naval warfare is a very complicated form of warfare that can involve all the other branches of the military and getting a simple KISS naval game to work is very difficult to achieve.

There are a lot more realistic naval games out there to play if that's what you want but remember in a lot of them aircraft just simply don't work.

There were plenty of times when bombers or seaplanes were flown off in the face of an imminent attack to protect them for a future combat or scouting mission, btw, because it didn't make sense to waste valuable assets when they were guaranteed to get slaughtered.

Very true. I guess the way to do this in the game is to have enough airplanes to out-place your opponent. That would simulate the "warning" and let the planes leave. Otherwise, it's like an un-expected attack that catches them.

Agreed. I just would think they would be vulnerable to a strafing attack, not an aa attack

Then they could NEVER get vitaled, instead of easily being vitaled for just sitting there. Strafing planes on a taxiway is super, super easy.
