Ships carrying mines were highly vulnerable to, well, blowing up!
I have recently read about a couple of occasions when a minelayer would dump its mines due to fear of them blowing up under attack when there was no prospect of them being laid.

I have thought of this little house rule. I give my minelayers a mine marker for each minefield they can lay and these can be placed on the board when laid. For each mine marker that a ship currently still has unlaid, reduce the vital armour of the ship by one.

A ship may dump its mines by performing a normal minelaying action, but declaring they are being dumped. A marker is removed, but no minefield is placed in the sector.

Sounds like a nice rule.

You could expand it to Japanese CA's, that were very susceptible to exploding before they launched their first batch of torpedoes, though you would only need one marker for them.

Other ships were poorly designed (Hood, anyone?) and had similar problems of being unsafe when fully loaded and MUCH safer when half full of ammo, fuel or as you pointed out ... mines.

Your rule certainly means that minelayers don't keep their mines onboard in the presence of enemy ships! It also shows why most minelaying was done in the absence of enemy ships!

(Do you do anything for minelaying planes?)

No, as generally the mines are being carried instead of bombs, so you would need a rule for bombs as well . As planes are representing multiple units, as opposed to single ships, I don't see it as such an issue here.

Also, did not those minelayers dump their mines BEFORE any engagement with the enemy? So doing it in battle is way too late, is it not?

Sorry, just trying to think things through, which is difficult because the mine rules are simplistic and not realistic.

However, I still think your idea has merit, and could be fun.

They did, and in real and game terms yes it would be. I would always choose to shoot rather than dump mines, but then if the minelayer was in action it may well be where it actually wants to lay the mines.

The dumping choice is really something that needs to be done before you engage and when you realise that your not going to be able to lay the mines where you want to.
