Post subject: Weather rules for smaller battles  Reply with quote   (Liked by:0)  Like this post
Smaller battles tend to have less stuff happening, so ticat1 and I are going to look at some different types of weather that is common at sea, and how to put that into a game.

Obviously, these would be optional rules, and easier to use for smaller battles, as they may tie down a larger battle too much.

By "different types of weather" I mean the different things that happen, in real life.

Currently, the game is played with the following conditions: CAVU. CAVU means "Ceiling and Visibility Unlimited", which happens ... but rarely.

1. Wind. Carriers can, in this game, launch planes no matter what direction they are facing, which is very un-realistic, yet very simple.

2. Smooth seas. There is no heavy rolls, or nasty waves, and I'm not even talking about storms. "Rolling Seas" are nasty and much more common in the open ocean.

3. Cloud layers. These things make it easy for planes to fly right over their targets and never see them, because there's a solid cloud layer, or even a patching cloud layer below them.

4. Limited Visibility. Fog banks, Mist, Haze, "Squalls", Rain, snow, "darkness", etc.

Note: NONE of the above are "storms". They are just "normal" variable conditions out in the ocean!

5. Squalls: Let's not forget these that are already in the game, and many have know them. As a reminder to myself, here's the rules for squall's showing up, from page 46 of the 2010 Rulebook:
Quote:
Determining Weather: If you and your opponent agree to the possibility of weather conditions in your scenario, roll a die after you select the battle zone. On a roll of 1-3, the battle takes place under clear conditions. On a 4, place one squall marker. On a 5, place two squall markers. On a 6, place 3 squall markers.

The effects are on page 32, and are basically concealment and line of sight issues.

6. Storms: Maybe the way to do these is just allowing things above to combine. Not sure.

We'll be working on ways to put these into the game hopefully in very simple ways!

He, he ... just found my first attempt at doing something with weather. (Took a while, was long ago!)

My first attempt 2 years ago for "more detailed" weather rules can be found at:
http://achievebalance.com/waratsea/wxv12.htm and the thread discussing them is at: http://aaminis.myfastforum.org/about41362.html
This time I don't want to vary it for which "Theater Club", I just want to do something simpler than before, which would probably work best in smaller matches.

A simple way to roll for weather would be to replace the current squall roll with something like the following:

Roll 1d6:
1 - no weather conditions, it's CAVU to the Moon!
2 - High Winds: CV's Launching/Recovering get -1 speed that turn.
3 - Rolling Seas: Use "Darkness" rules for Surface Attack Phase.
4 - Cloud Layers: Use "Darkness" rules for all 4 Air Phases.
5 - Limited Visibility: Use all "Darkness" rules.
6 - Squalls: Roll again to see how many.

That's pretty simple, with no new rules to learn, other than CV's being affected by the wind.

ok, here's the just-before-battle proposal:

Before the battle, roll the "Weather Die". It is rolled only once and that's the weather throughout the battle.

Roll 1d6:
1 - no weather conditions: It's CAVU (Ceiling And Visibility Unlimited) to the Moon!
2 - High Winds: CV's Launching/Recovering get -1 speed that turn AND use Air Return Phase for CV landings only.
3 - Rolling Seas: Use "Darkness" rules for Surface Attack Phase.
4 - Cloud Layers: Use "Darkness" rules for all 4 Air Phases.
5 - Limited Visibility: Use all "Darkness" rules AND all surface units have concealment (see below!)
6 - Squalls: Roll again to see how many, using current rules.

The following information is from the rulebook,  (slightly abbreviated).
Darkness Rules:

Surface Attack Phase:

All ASW and Torpedo attacks, as well as the following Gunnery attacks are unaffected:
- Range 0 attacks, attacks on ships that started the phase damaged/crippled.
- However, Extended Range Gunnery attacks can’t be made at all.
Gunnery attacks at range 1, 2 or 3 take a -1 penalty per die. Ships with “Improved Radar”, “Radar Fire Control” or “Radar Solution” special abilities ignore this penalty.

Concealment (not part of Darkness): A target with “Concealment” is allowed a “concealment roll” to make the attack miss. After a successful attack on a unit, the defender olls a die. On a 5 or 6, the attack misses. If both are in same sector, the concealment roll succeeds only on a “6”.

Air Mission Phase: Make a search check each time you place an air unit. To make a search check, roll a die and check the result:
Patrol Bomber Succeeds on 3+
All other aircraft Succeed on 5+
If the search check succeeds, place the unit normally. If it fails, place the unit with an Aborted marker. It cannot attack nor be attacked this turn.

Air Defense Phase: All units take a -1 penalty per attack die on AA attacks.

Air Attack Phase: All Aircraft take a -1 penalty per attack die on Gunnery, Bomb and ASW attacks, they roll one less attack die when making Torpedo attacks.

Air Return Phase: All non-Patrol Bomber Aircraft roll a die to make a recovery check. On a one, they are destroyed.

We have play-tested these 3 times so far, and learned that because there are so few "new" rules, it works very well. It is easier in a smaller fleet because there's less going on.

It's been fun, I ask people to try it out and see if you like the "realistic" limitations it gives you, without being a "burden".
