I realize the scenarios were posted years ago, but I am just know getting the ships to do them (without all the proxies in the original AH scenario), and so was looking to sit down and play some of the AH Guadalcanal scenarios with the right ships and Darkness Rules.

Anyhow, reading the old scenario special rules, I noticed this doozy:

"Units may only attack other targets in the same square as them. Alternatively, they may fire at targets that have fired against units that are adjacent or in the same square as the target."

I get the rules is trying to simulate the "simultaneous ambush" conditions of the actual fight, but I do not quite understand what the "fire at [enemy] targets that have fired at [friendly] units that are adjacent or in the same square as the [enemy] target" part is trying to replicate or how it is supposed to work in practice. I am not sure why the target is penalized for firing at units at close range but not at those which were farther away. Perhaps more importantly, the rule does not clarify whether the non-adjacent enemy units are targetable from that point on, or whether the targetable non-adjacent units reset at the end of each turn. If the latter, it would be a powerful advantage to the player with initiative, though it would also sort of make the part about "targets that have fired at units that are adjacent" redundant, as the player who lost initiative would not ever be able to fire at an adjacent unit.

I am curious if this was a typo, and the rules was supposed to be that an enemy you could attack an enemy unit that was adjacent or in the same square that had fired at an adjacent or same square friendly unit?

I think that special rule is trying to replicate firing at an enemy's muzzle flashes.   I'm thinking the special rule would reset from turn to turn, so it would be better for the player with initiative.

Alternatively, I would house rule that the special rule applies from a player's gunnery phase to that player's next gunnery phase.  That would require keeping track of which ships fired in the previous gunnery phases.
