Our gaming group played WaS utilizing the large map house rules (by Afilter).  This is my dark blue vinyl mat obtained at the local fabrics store on clearance for only $6 (due to wrinkling).  It was cut to size about 4'x5' with 4 inch sea zones.

The speed chart for aircraft adds to the fun factor though larger battles can be prolonged compared to direct placement as per standard rules.

Well we had another WaS gathering yesterday evening.  This time we did a 300 point carrier based Pacific battle. For this scenario there were no landing zones with a couple house rules  tried to make the game interesting:

-land based fighters were allowed on carriers and

-once during the game, 12 pts of kamikaze and high level bombers (in this case, Liberators) were allowed by their respective sides.  These could be placed during an air movement phase without rolling a die for entry.  Basically single use bonus attacks.   This was purely experimental but worked out for both sides.

We've come accustomed using the large map for our WaS gatherings however with so many aircraft, it was decided to place them via the traditional rules instead of individual speed ratings.   Here are some pics and a quick review of how things played out:

Absence of landing zones naturally made loss of even one carrier a major ordeal for either side.   Here, the crippled Akagi, the last of their carriers, was soon destroyed by air assaults.

All hope was not lost for the Japanese.  Despite eventual loss of air support,  a morale booster came when the Musashi later 'vitals' the already injured Iowa with a single roll!.

In time, attrition on both sides left the I-19 and Musashi to hunt for the only remaining US vessels- the Intrepid and Lexington.  It was survival mode as the battleship must fend off constant air barrage during the brief cat and mouse chase for the carriers.

A well fought battle ends grim for the Japanese as the Lexington watches its aircraft land the finishing blows

curious if anyone else is currently using the large map house rules and additional scenarios factoring in land battles on the same map.

Yes.  I am currently playing a1250 point per side scenario set in the Eastern Med.  The board is easily twice the size shown in the first post of this thread.

Greeks!  Turks!  Even the odd Spaniard or two.  All joining in the party with the Italians, Commonwealth, and German airforce.  I'll see if I can't get a picture up later.
