I'm adding +1 endorsements, if I may, to the following. I'm working my way through the entire Osprey Publishing Campaign and New Vanguard series for WWII. I started with Germany and think I'm almost done.
Additionally, I think you guys should consider setting up a LibraryThing.com account and list the books in there. People can add reviews, rate the items, do trades, and find out how to purchase the titles.
I use LibraryThing (its free) and can give you more information on it if you're interested. I catalog titles I own and titles I get from the library. It has a lot of features such as tags. I'll link to my History tags so you can see what I mean (it shows a lot of Osprey Publishing titles): My History Books and My Osprey Publishing Books for the OP titles.
Here's a link to how organizations (like book clubs, and online discussion groups like us) can get an account with group access and whatnot: http://www.librarything.com/organizations.

| For some reason, I failed to mention Japanese Cruisers of the Pacific War by Lacroix and Wells, which may be the finest warship reference ever written (by someone other than me). It also doubles as a hernia-creator. Use a forklift. |

A plus one for Fleets of WWII by Richard Worth.  I just got a used copy. It really does make a great complement to Conway's. Conway's has the stats and Fleets has more 'explanation' behind the stats.
I think and update/reprint would be great if your publisher is willing!

I will give that one a +1 too. It is mainly oriented toward miniature figure painters. It's focus is the uniforms and insignia used by the RN during the war although it gives some general information on 'life in the service' during that time as well.

Just picked up a copy of Fleets of WWII from the local library. Still trying to locate Broken Sword.

I just finished 'Guadalcanal' by Richard B. Frank, 1990, Penguin Books, 800 pages. This is one of the flat-out best books I have ever read about WWII or any other topic. It is incredibly detailed and well researched, but still highly readable. I was expecting the book to be mostly about the land campaign, but I was surpised to find a very detailed and beautifully described naval campaign as well. His prose is easy to read, and he maintains continuity through an incredibly complex and multi-faceted campaign. As he quotes Churchill, the war in the Pacific was 'triphibious' with air, land, and sea elements. Frank moves almost effortlessly between these facets and ties them together so the reader does not get confused or lost. I do highly recommend the reader look at a good map of the Southwest Pacific, the Solomons, and Guadalcanal before reading the book. The book provides many maps, but they sometimes lack critical details and the author sometimes refers to landmarks and places that are not shown on any of the maps. Other than that minor nit, this is the book to read if you want to understand how the strategy and tactics of the island campaign in the Pacific came to be.

Okay, time to add some recommendations for some books I have read recently.
Please give a +1 to the following books:
"Pursuit" by Ludovic Kennedy
"The Carrier War" by Edwin Hoyt
"The Great Ships, British Battleships in World War II" by Peter C. Smith
"Shattered Sword" by Jonathan Parshall and Anthony Tully
"Duels in the Sky" by Captain Eric Brown
These are books I would not recommend:
"USN Carriers vs. IJN Carriers: The Pacific 1942" by Mark Stille
This book was too simplistic. It might work well for someone who has no familiarity with the Pacific War at all, but it's not good for someone who wants to achieve a true depth of understanding.
"The Battle of Leyte Gulf" by Edwin Hoyt
The book had very little flow. Some parts, such as the description of the sinking of the Princeton or the attack on Takao and Atago, were very good. However, far too much of the book was simply a rehashing of the battle reports without any analysis of them. It made for very dry, unenjoyable reading.
"Rendezvous With Destiny" by Theodore Mason
This book almost bored me to tears. I couldn't even make it through it. Unlike the other two non-recommendations I posted above, I see no redeeming value in this book at all.

I don't recommend this book. It's a fun read, but when I read it there were a number of things that just seemed . . . off. It really seems to have been written in an attempt to please an American audience.
After doing a bit of research my suspicions were confirmed. The author may not have intentionally lied about things, but there are a large number of inaccuracies in the book. |

Zig, I've meant to give this another update for a while now.
I'll add: any WWII ships volume of Squadron/Signal's "Warships In Action" series, along with their "Aircraft In Action", "Walk Around" and for the groundgame "Armor In Action" series.
