As many of you know, I have made cards for all the ships who did NOT get all their guns on their cards. Atago, which had 5" secondaries is a prime example. So is Kirov, Molotov, Von der Tann, and several others, including Brit cruisers.

Having just about finished that, it's time for me to look at the torpedo stats. I was trying to find a way to more consistently stat torpedoes and have found that:

1. Sometimes ships got their stats reduced because half their torpedo launchers were on each beam, so they could only fire half at a target.
2. Sometimes they didn't.

So it seems that it made no difference where the TT mounts were on the ship when it came to stats. That's consistent with the stats for secondaries, which also seemed to be inconsistently assigned.

One thing that made RB's job very difficult was the torpedo failures for almost all countries in the first few years of the war. The "infamous" Mark14 shot by American Subs did not get fixed until 1943, about the same time the Germans were introducing better torpedoes as well. Also, several countries had better torpedoes later in the war.

Thus, the same ship/sub/plane may have had trouble with torpedoes early war, yet had note late war. However, our cards don't reflect that.

I'm looking at a way to standardize it, one option open to me is to give many destroyers that don't have a range-2 attack an attack of 1 at that range, because they would have had it.

Another option, is to look at cards that are early war, and make another card for the same ship late war, at a higher cost. Or vice-versa, make early war cards for late war ships with poorer torpedoes and lower cost.

It'll be quite the project, will keep my notes and findings here. Here are some sources:

It appears that, all countries had torpedo problems through about 1942, and in 1943 those problems went away.
The flawed torpedoes could not reach 10k yards (2 sectors) while the improved ones could do that.

Another subject is that of range; there are a few units in the game that probably get range 2 Torps that don't really rate it, and LL torps could have theoretically hit out to Range 4.

Doctrine also needs to be considered. For example (and as best as I can recall) the UK was all about firing the entire salvo from their ships in one go while Italy took a more measured approach.

When playing Fighting Steel I believe after I fired all the torps from one side of a ship I had to turn and fire them from the other thanks to where they were located.

War at sea is on such a scale it probably doesn't care about that...and I'm happy not to track it lol.
