Post subject: Naming Decision
|
|
|
My learned colleague, Buzzkill, has offered a good solution to the naming conundrum.
1. The base infantry unit for each nation will be named after the rifle it carries. When two or more countries use the same rifle (Germany & Poland), we'll use language or designation to differentiate the units. If two countries use the same language (UK & Australia), we'll throw in the name of the country.
2. As infantry evolves during the course of the war, we'll use different names for the infantry. If the rifle changes, that'll be easy (Springfield-->Garand, eg). If it doesn't, we'll try "Afrika Korps Vet" or something along those lines.
3. As much as possible, we'll name units after weapons (MP-40, Thompson, Bren, Bazooka, etc).
4. Other units will get names from their specialization (Pioneers, Cavalry, Fallschirmjager, etc). As much as possible, these will be in the language of the unit.
5. Named units (3rd Coldstream Guards, 6/9 Royal Scots, German 78th Div, 101st Airborne) will be based on the history of that unit. I don't know how these will fit into tournaments, but they will be available for scenarios.
I hope this can satisfy everyone since it seems to cover all the objections. If not, please be gentle.
I'm still thinking about CA, so please keep throwing out ideas. _________________

After this experience, the only running I will do is away from responsibility.
It was your idea, BK. _________________

Good decision. Seems to address all comments. Good job.
May I only add that Riflemen at the end of the name could be useful?
I'd go for "British SMLE Mk.III Riflemen" or "British Riflemen" if that's their only rifle. For example, most know it as Lee-Enfield, and when we use SMLE Mk.III, it may not be obvious that this is a rifle. Well, it may be in this case, but when it comes to less popular nations, such as the Hungarians, the name of their rifle (Puska 35M) may not be enough to explain what the unit is. It looks more like an antiair or mortar name to me. _________________

Also, when you finish the cards of these units please post them altogether in one thread, so as to compare them for a week before we lock them.
I've run out of time. See you later, probably Thursday or Friday. _________________
