seems even in 1944, the sinlge engine air attack would have used some version of the type 91 torp, the longest range version of that being 2,000m.

<shrug>

a hit or 2 on CL 81 (Houston II) maybe ? or USS canberra at same battle ? those may have come from other aircraft

I've read in a few places that heavy USN AA forced IJN torp bombers to drop at increasingly long ranges as the war progressed. This obviously effected accuracy, but a torpedo in the water, even fired from long range, was still a pretty scary thing.  Most of what I've seen in print suggests this was more of a "this is a close as I dare get" kind of thing for the pilot, rather than a deliberate tactic.  But I could be completely off base - I'm far from certain one way or the other.
