What\'s the most powerful Special Ability in War at Sea?
I'm just curious to see what people think.  Also, please don't answer "it all depends on context."  That is doubtlessly true, but take a stand in favor of what you think the best one is overall.

The opinions so far (rough estimate, as I had to interpret a few answers):
Long Lance 5.5
Close Escort 5
Escort 4
Lay Smoke Screen 3.5
Scout Planes 2.5
Torpedo Defense 2
Shadowing 1.5
Sub Hunter 1.5
Anti-Ship Missile 1.5
Press The Attack 1
Determination 1
Drive Off 1
Mines 1
Near Miss 1
Excellent Spotting 1
What\'s the most powerful Special Ability in War at Sea?
Would think its either Long Lance or Torpedo defense
What\'s the most powerful Special Ability in War at Sea?
lay smoke screen is a very strong SA because used clever the SA decrease the chance of your enemy can shot at your units and even the percentage of being hit .
What\'s the most powerful Special Ability in War at Sea?
Close Escort

Escort.  No rolls, it's just always there as long as you bring a fighter that has it.

I think determination is the best one. You can keep a ship alive indefinitely, as long as you keep rolling well.

I am with Wilt- escort goes a long way, has the potential to eliminate a lot of 4's.
What\'s the most powerful Special Ability in War at Sea?
I would say Long Lance, but I can see the argument for Escort.
What\'s the most powerful Special Ability in War at Sea?
I'm very fond of sub hunter.  Makes enemy subs sweat bigtime.

Also lay smoke screen.  And several cheap DDs have both !

Usn summers are me favorite dd for that reason.

Ive been thinking and so far have yet to come up with just one sa that can make or break a game. Only thing i can come up with is the +LL stacking SAs but that's more than one

I would say ER4/5, Long Lance and Torpedo Defense are the strongest. However, I don't really see these as very 'special' because so many units share the ability. Kind of like a submarine having submerged shot- it is a part of most subs as ER4 is a part of most battleships.
Close Escort is a favorite of mine and I think Sub Hunter is great too. Smoke Screen can be a hindrance. Perhaps a Special Ability poll is in order here.

spotting gets used quite a bit and a new powerful one is Chikuma's Scout Planes.

My money is on Shadowing given the strength of air as it is shadowing can be unpleasant.

Yes, I agree with Herky that there are certain 'default' SAs that are clearly the 'best' (ie, Long Lance). But as far as semi-unique SAs, I'd go with Press the Attack.

IMO, DBs with Press are viable, whereas I dont want DBs without it. This is why I've never understood the whining about the Helldiver. To me, it's substandard just because it's actually going to get to attack less often. I'd rather have my DBs concentrating on targets without ridiculous armor, so the extra die or so is less important than actually getting to attack. And the targets you need really need the extra dice vs (ie, BBs) tend to have higher AA values and more chance of an abort (although even a 'Pressed' DB will have a hard time hitting a BB on 5+).

torpedo defense.  it just became even more valuable with the Sunderland around.
What\'s the most powerful Special Ability in War at Sea?
sub hunter.

when enemies place subs next to objectives you can just drop in near it and when they keep subs close to ships, here comes kamikazi DD's!!!!
What\'s the most powerful Special Ability in War at Sea?
+1 vote for press the attack.   Aside from a roll of one, whats not to like?
What\'s the most powerful Special Ability in War at Sea?
Close Escort.
What\'s the most powerful Special Ability in War at Sea?
Drive off!
What\'s the most powerful Special Ability in War at Sea?
Escort, no other ability actually makes your opponents rolls worse permanently.
