Thanks, but I'd prefer not to do a complete scratch build. Never done one and I wouldn't know how to build the hull.
I'm assuming its cutting out, gluing and filing styrene plates together until desired shape is achieved?
Another issue I'm having is finding blueprints. There doesn't seem to be much info let alone reference images on the Malta class. Then again, it never reached fruition, so I shouldn't be surprised. _________________

Intrepid? Eh.... Wasn't planning on that. Too much $$$ for a conversion piece. Perhaps I might give it a shot at scratch building then... _________________

Well, I did find one from Mountford, but its 1:1250. Not the scale I had in mind.
Ebay search yields nothing.
So either I make the ship from scratch, or start with the Intrepid for conversion I guess. _________________

she's huge! You would need to stretch an Illustrious 1 1/8 inches to make it the correct length. I'd have to I'd try a scratch build myself. You need to start sometime, why not now? _________________

That's true, but since this so new to me I'm worried about messing the ship up. Also, there is still the issue of lack of blueprints.
Although, the Malta is indeed present in the game NavyField, so maybe I can look at that for references.
Also, I could use the images of the Mountford model as I go.
Thanks for the advice thus far. _________________

I would trace out the hull and flight deck from an Intrepid in styrene and use that. _________________

don't be afraid to make mistakes, that is how you learn. Or at least that is how I learned what to do and what not to do. _________________

Yea, your gonna mess up. I have two half gnarled hulls for a Taiho I was attempting to make. Granted I have put them on the back burner for now. Not much time. But atleast I know not what to do. lol _________________ Take a peek at my tradelist:

Thank you guys, I think I will take a whack at it. Thanks also Drittal for the excellent images.
First off though, I'm going to read up on the scratch-building stickies. _________________

Started the Malta a few weeks ago, working on the hull. The dark stuff is modeling putty, to smoothen the hull out.
Here she is compared to Intrepid.
Lower shot now, still working on rounding out the hull.
In the back are a few Van Galens which will be stripped for guns/structures. Thank you Miniature Market for those!
This is my first major scratch, as I saw the Sable as a warm-up. Hope you guys like it so far! _________________

Looking good so far...
I remember my first "Scratch build" I did the USS Hornet. Used the Enterprise as a guideline.
here are some photo's from the build
When building this, I used the "stacking" technique. That is; using thick sheets of styrene and cutting the shape then gluing them on top of each layer.
Another shot from behind.
An Aft side by side view of the Hornet/Yorktown wip. You can't see it but the deck actually has fine lines going perpandicular to the length on the deck. The sheet was already scribed with them.
I completely scratch built her. Not one WAS ship part on her.
Another Side by side view with the Hornet/Yorktown wip. Notice the cutouts just under the deck. It is done that way on both sides as per the original model.
A top down view.
Pic of finished Hornet (this was before I repainted.)
One piece of advice. When base coating, don't leave the piece in the sun. It does nasty stuff to the piece. Hence the deck and elevator. _________________ The SCA: Just an excuse for getting dressed up in Medieval clothing and beat each other up with padded sticks! |
