Creativity Challenge #9
              Deadline:  28 September Midnight edt

Welcome contestants!  The army you created and posted has travelled back in time to a great defeat suffered by your country.  It will appear for 15 minutes (one seven-turn game) during this battle and attempt to change history.  Your challenge is to tell the tale of this epic and the Forumini members will judge how effective you are.

You must relate:

1.  Exactly where and when your army appears.  (eg, 3 July 1863 at 3 pm on the eastern slope of Seminary Ridge)

2.  What actions your units take.

3.  How the enemy responds to your appearance.

4.  How history is changed in the short and long run.

Stipulations:

1.  The enemy is not affected psychologically by the sudden appearance of your soldiers or their modern weapons.  In fact, they immediately implement the most effective countermeasures at their disposal.

2.  You have a normal combat load of ammo.

3.  Behavior of your units should be guided by their cards and not historical reality when the two conflict.  All SA’s are in effect.

4.  The battle can be any before 1930.

5.  You cannot change your posted army.

6.  If your country suffered a civil war, your army may appear for either side if you choose a battle from that conflict.

7.  Obstacles may appear anywhere on the battlefield.

8.  Don't forget that visibility in early gunpowder battles is a factor.

You can write this either as a continuous narrative or as an after-action report as if an AAM game were being played (divided into turns, phases, etc).  Voters should judge the results based on creativity, effective story-telling, how well the four conditions above are met and on how imaginative the enemy response is.  (“Since their arrows bounced off the armor, my tanks crushed thousands of Mongols under their treads and I won the battle.” would not be considered very creative.)

Please post any questions.  You can post your entries in this thread and change them at any time before the deadline of 28 September.

Can I use Galipoli? or is that not enough of a disastrous defeat for the Commonwealth?

I'd say that counts.

Sharps has the final say, though.

You can use Gallipoli, but no Mel Gibson.  He wasn't on your army list.

Battle of AGRA, Oktober,11 1857 – during the Indian rebellion of 1857.

The historical Battle of Agra was only a „minor“ encounter, but it had an decisive impact on the course of the rebellion as after there was no more organised opposition between Dehli and Cawnpore.

Brigadier Edward Greathed had responded to pleas for help from Agra as it was found that rebellious troops were gathering nearby. Almost 2000 Punjabi and Sikh soldiers and over 700 British troops marched in little more than a day from Dehli to Agra. The exhausted troops settled to rest without taking precautions against a surprise attack.

This attack came naturally. Sepoy artillery opened up at the British troops, Cavalry descended on the camping troops and infantry stormed too join into melee.

Hardened Veterans they were the Punjabi, Sikhs and British troops rallied, fell into ranks and returned fire. Soon the British cavalry was about to launch a flanking attack at both sides, when suddenly...

... three mechanical elephants broke from a small wooded area and opened up on the Cavalry. A hail of bullets tore through men and horses leaving the British right flank a chaotic bloody mass of dead and wounded bodies.

Meanwhile on the left flank a thin line of Indian (?) soldiers charged the preparing Cavalry. They seemed to have no discipline as some stayed behind. Others dispersed before they came into firing range. The British officers decided to ignore them – which proved to be fatal. The men who had stayed behind fired something that had the effect of grape shot. Horses and men panicked and the dispersed soldiers fired their muskets from a range no accurate fire should be possible. The Sikh troops broke away from the main battle and tried to counterattack the troops that annihilated their cavalry.

But to their surprise they found no attacker. But the loss of their cavalry and Sikh troops seeking a ghostly enemy and not battling the real one resulted in a bloody massacre. From almost 3.000 loyal soldiers only a handful survived to tell the tale. As the mechanical elephants never reappeared and the tale of the far reaching muskets was unbelievable their report was treated as a fairy tale to mask a bitter defeat.

The battle of Agra was the first in a line of successes for the rebels, partly due to the morale boost. Partly because of the supplys and weapons that fell into rebel hands at Agra.

The Indian rebellion continued well into the early 60s of the 19th century before it was finally put down. But resistance never ceased totally. When in 1914 the Great War broke out. The British could not rely on troops from India, but had to increase their garrisons as German equipped rebellions broke out and turned the subcontinent into another battlefield.

What could have become a pearl in the british crown was a crippling wound. On all fronts the Germans, Austrians and Ottomans made more progress than in our reality. When the Russian revolution finally came, the Czar sued for peace (Lenin was not transferred as Germanys situation was not alarming as it was in 1917 in our reality). German and Austrian prisoners were soon released and filled the ranks on the Western and Italian fronts. Thus breaking the stalemate for some time. But also in 1917 the US joined the war. But with Russia and India in rebellion even the US troops were not enough to tilt the balance completely. In Early 1918 another stalemate was reached - dragging into late 1919. Germans and Austrians meanwhile fought aside British and French troops in Russia to prevent the Revolution from winning (the monarchies saw more danger from a Red Russia than from a Czarist one).

In Early 1920 – the fighting at the western front had quite calmed down – the US had hoped for a quick victory, but the stalemate and the spanish flu had undermined the will and ability of both sides to launch greater offensives – emmissaries from both sides opened secret negotiations. After 2 months a compromise was reached. In western Europe the status ante bellum was declared. Germany did not take ist colonies back, but a German prince was crowned King of a Poland - made from former German, Austrian and Russian provinces. Austria was transformed into a loose Confederacy nominally headed by the Austrian Emperor, but Austrians, Hungarins, Czechs formed three more or bess independent countries with strong ties. The Ottoman Empire was reformed, but had to let go of Arabia and Palestina. The latter was transformed into a half jewish/half arab puffer state between British possessions and the Ottoman provinces of Syria and Iraq. The French began to rebuild their devastated country in the north. The Czar with the help of allies and former enemies regained control, but had to allow reforms to take place.

The British Empire suffered most in the following years. India reached independency in 1925 and Ireland was also granted freedom. Japan dominated the Western Pacific - slowly taking over China. The US withdrew into isolationism (heavy losses in the war).

Of course there was no WWII or cold war. But also the European Union never formed. We still live in a mostly colonial world with several big Empires and technology develops slower...

In 2020 the first mission to the moon is planned to celebrate the end of the Great War 100 years ago.

August 29, 1526
Mohács, Baranya, south of Budapest, Hungary

“As far as we can tell, the Hungarian right is pushing forward, last report from Suleiman said they were making good progress, sir”
“Send in the reserves; see if we can stop their push.”
“Sir.”
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tormori’s troops where in high spirits. They had engaged the invading Turks, and were pushing them back. They could see, over the small dips and hills that covered the battlefield, Turks retreating in all directions. As their commanders pushed them deeper and deeper into Turkish lines, though, they began to meet more resistance. The Turk riflemen (armed with brand new, state of the art rifled weapons)  would retreat as soon as the Hungarians got close, then turn and fire on them again. Just like they were part of a delaying operation of some type….
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Páncélos Vállalat’s commander, Istvan Vadas, watched through his binoculars.  “ETA for the Turkish Reserves?”
“10 Minutes, sir.”
“Good, we have some time. Prepare the tanks and ready the infantry. We move out in 5.”
“Yes, sir”
Why did high command have to send ME on this mission,” thought Vadas, “My only prior command was a single one of our Turans…now they send me with a whole armored company back in time to stop the Turks grabbing the land from our country. Well, there is one thing good about this…if it is successful…the Nazis won’t be walking all over our country…we’ll be the ones in power.”
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Turkish reserves had met almost no resistance. The hit-and-run style of their long riflemen was very effective against the Hungarian drive. Due to their poor communication and poor command, the Hungarians had not pushed up on their other flanks, leaving their right out unsupported, ripe for plucking. Then they were spotted. Huge, lumbering machines, that had a cannon bigger than most artillery, Turkish or Hungarian. Immediately, Turkish artillery fire was called upon them, but even though many shells fell around the beats, they seemed unharmed. No unit had gotten within musket range, they all were wiped out by the Hungarian's artillery monstrosities. All the Turkish artillery was being massed in one spot, and all the spare musketeers were being marshaled for an assault on the beasts. If they were not destroyed soon, it would be too late for the Turkish invasion force…
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Vadas was ecstatic. The Páncélos Vállalat had completely crushed the Turkish right, and was swinging around to complete the destruction. Sure, the artillery was still falling around them, but casualties had been very light, mainly among the infantry covering the Turans, though one of the tankers suffered a slight head wound, and a greater wound to his pride when he stuck his head out the drivers hatch and was cut by some shrapnel.  Now if only there was some way to get the Hungarians to advance…
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Hungarian high command knew something was happening, but not what. The king was missing in action, (“probably ran away again,” thought one of the ministers), but the artillery had stopped falling on the troops. No runners sent to the right flank had any news, other than it looked deserted, and the faint sound of artillery was heard. “Why would they stop hitting us with artillery? This doesn’t make any sense…
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Pull over the Turans, we are going to ready for the final push” Vadas’ voice came crackling over the inter-company radio.
“Sir, that’s dangerous! Can’t you hear the artillery falling outside?”
“It’s a chance we have to take, we need to get a battle plan going, and we can’t do it over these stinking radios.”
“Sir…(sigh)”
And that was when all the Turkish artillery finally got into position. The first few shots were well off target, but once the gunners adjusted their aim, the barrage was devastating. When their comrades started dying around them, the tankers finally realized that the artillery was their greatest enemy.
“Back to the tanks!!!” screamed Vadas. Everyone sprinted back to their vehicles. No one had a full crew anymore, and nearly all the infantry was destroyed.
“We have to make a dash for it!” came crackling over the radio,
“But our driver is…OH MY GO….” was sent back. Then they heard it. Well, more felt than heard, as Turan number 3 was hit directly by a shell. The explosions sent shards of shrapnel in every direction.
“Well, they don’t need to worry about that driver anymore,” thought  Vadas grimly, “Why does dark humor always have a place during a war?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hungarian Páncélos Vállalat casualties:
The entire crew of Turan number 3
Radioman, Turan number 7
Gunner, Turan number 5
Commander, Gunner, Turan number 4
Radioman, Turan number 2
Driver, Turan number 1
Radioman, Commander, Turan number 6
The entire infantry detachment

            Aftermath of the battle:
The Turkish invasion force fell back in confusion, believing there was more of the ‘monsters’ to come after. For now, the Republic of Hungary was safe from invasion. This gave the High Command of the Hungarian armed forces time to purge the inept commanders and replace them, stopping the second advance from the Turks cold. With the constant invasions of the Turks, money was poured into buildup of the Armed Forces, much like Israel is today. The result of their highly advanced military, Hungary was able to be extremely successful in WWI, and with their research already highly advanced, Hungary was able to dominate the Russians in WWII, coming to the rescue of Operation Barbarossa, and continuing on to Moscow. The first units of any nation to enter Moscow, was the Hungarian 23rd Infantry Division. Though Germany was still defeated by the Americans and British, Hungary was able to hold out and negotiate a peace with the Allied powers. The military poweress of Hungary continues to this day, and is a threat not only to all of Europe, but to the rest of the world as well….

Time warp at Lutzen 1632.

Weeks of retreat had worn out SS Usha Kovinsky. Long had gone the early victory days of 41 and the conquest of Rostow. The SS Wiking division was now a shadow of its former self. Luckily Kovinsky could still have long talks about the military history of Germany with his long term friend Sharpinsky, the leader of his armored vehicles' kampfgruppe. During the retreat from Rostow they had long talks about the XVIII's century battles for Saxony. They could forget about the icy winds.

They recalled how at the battle of Lutzen the swedish army defeated the imperial army despite the death of their king leading his cavalry at the moment of truth.

SS Kovinsky, having lost contact both on his right and left, watched the horizon. He could tell some STRANGE storm was brewing up north of his battlegroup. He had a look at his kampfgruppe. Frozen veterans and what was left of his heavy support units were clinging to his last few stugs. No signs of soviets.

Suddenly it all happened!

Thunder-electrical thunderstorms. Heavy snows and stormy winds. All of the kampfgruppe vehicles stopped moving. Fog surrounded the troops.

The SS leader listened to the unreal silence.

He couldnt, for a split second see his troops.

Then blackness, then more fog.

Voices in swedish "long live the king!"

SS Kovinsky could not believe his eyes as the fog lifted up. A huge battle field was right in front of his eyes. The german imperial army was facing the swedish invador!

He turned around to have alook at his KG. It was still there. The tanks would not move as if stuck in time. He gave one order though: "hedgehog!"

It was too late, the swedish cavalry with the king leading the assault was almost upon them. The next moment, the flamer unit was hit by the sword of a cavalry man and sprayed one of the stugs. It went up in flames along with a squad of veterans.

The swedish, organized,  had brought light artillery to support the cavalry's charge and it soon hit  SS Kovinsky's battlegoup. Death was everywhere.

Kovinsky then took his mauser out and aimed at the first cavalry man in line and shot. The King fell from his horse. And a huge storm broke out!

...Kovinsky woke up a few days later and found himself onto a military hospital bed at Odessa. None of his friends had made it.

What had happened?

Battle of Chunuk Bair, Gallipoli Campaign, August 8th 1915

760 Men of the The Wellington Battalion took the summit of Chunuk Bair at 3am, after continuous assault from Ottoman forces starting not two hours later, 711 became casualties, perhaps history could be rewritten under the right circumstances.

August 8th 1915, High Noon

Lieutenant Masterson of the 1st Division, Wellington Battalion, was surrounded by carnage.  The Turks had been counterattacking the Battalion's all too easily won position on Chunuk Bair for the past seven hours, casualties were mounting, and soldiers were fighting to their dying breath, but the Turks just kept coming.

This was all he could think of was that they just KEEP COMING

Like a horde of angry insects the Turks were relentless, killing Masterson's friends, wounding him, and continuously charging up the hill. He picked up a nearby Lee-Enfield and dropped a pair of Turks with two well placed, but close range, shots.  His left arm was still bleeding profusely and he thought he was starting to see spots.

They just keep coming, he could see them down the hill marshaling

A corpsman came and bound his wound in double quick time, stopping the flow of blood, but the damage was likely already done.  Masterson felt weak, his breath was laboured, but he fought on taking out his service pistol and using it to take another Turk who had just slit the throat of a man he had played cards with the evening before.

They just keep coming more appeared over the top of the trench

A madman with a pair of rifles, held in a way Masterson was sure wasn't regulation, was firing both from the hip looking like some kind of wild barbarian.  The soldier dropped one and used the other like a long club, its bayonette lost, lodged deep in the chest of a enemy.  It was a bloody massacre.

They just keep coming, he spared a look again down the hill towards another mass of troops making their way towards his position.

Masterson collapsed into the trench and felt he was dying, for only the dying can hear the thunder of Heaven and with perfect clarity he could hear the moans of the dead.   A dead Turk fell across him, riddled with bullets that had come from behind him and he could hear a man shouting about some great armored vehicles that had suddenly appeared at the foot of the hill.  He summoned up his remaining strength and pulled himself to the edge of the trench.

What are those, he wondered looking down the hill.

Seven lumbering steel beasts had appeared on the ridge not a few minutes ago and had set upon the engaging Turks with a divine vengeance for the fallen.  Masterson knew not what they were, but he was certain they were on his side, one bore the symbol of the Commonwealth on its armored hull, and another was flying the Jack proudly.

The four smaller vehicles on the wings of three larger were faster and seemed to be producing fire from all their directions.  Masterson watched as one blazed fire into a squad of Turks from four mounted machine guns and its cannon utterly annihilated another group of assaulting Turks.

The Ottoman forces were at first surprised at the sudden arrivals, but their commander began attempting an effective counter to this counter attack, ordering the men to get as close to the treaded beasts as possible and to try and get a grenade inside, or in a vital looking space.

The smaller ones were more heavily armed against infantry, but the slower, lumbering ones, the Turks could get close enough to them.  They knocked the treads off one, effectively immobilizing it, but that did little to prevent its effectiveness, its cannon still fired.  A second larger one had its turret jammed and disloated when a soldier jammed his sword within the turret ring following his blade with a grenade.

Then shells began falling near the Turkish position, near the steel boxes. This was not Ottoman artillery, this was British naval artillery badly aimed.  One shell reduced one of the smaller vehicles to a crater and flaming shrapnel.  Another fell alarming close to Masterson, killing his commanding officer instantly.

But this didn't stop the remaining hulks.  The immobilized one fired the shell that killed the enemy commanding officer and without their leadership the Ottoman forces began to falter.  The hill was no longer an objective, neither was stopping these steel beasts, their best option now was to escape, and what began as a counter offensive against the New Zealand soldiers turned into a bloody rout for the Ottomans.

They've stopped.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the aftermath of the battle of Chunuk Bair the Wellington Battalion was relieved after sustaining roughly 50% casualties by two other Battalions, who reported when they arrived that a man wearing a recognizably British uniform was in command of the defense, he identified himself as a Lieutenant Upright of the 2nd Armored, in command of the recently reduced platoon of tanks.  His casualties being two disabled infantry tanks and one destroyed light tank.  Upon being relieved by Major Langerton he returned to his vehicle and reports state that they disappeared, even damaged components and hull fragments from the vehicles was no where to be found.  The landings at Gallipoli were still for the most part a failure, but Lieutenant Masterson did eventually recover from his wounds after spending significant time in hospital.

Masterson would eventually join the Army General Staff and take a significant position in the committees to develop tank warfare, having seen their effect first hand.  His report from Chunuk Bair and several others caused an increased push and demand for updated armored vehicle technology, and so when British Tanks and German Tanks met on the battlefields of World War II 26 years later, it was the Germans who found themselves out-classed.

Just an idea: it would be nice to have a recap of the units chosen in the first part of this contest attached to the story.

From the Secret Vatican Files on probable Divine Intervention.

8th February 1942
Battle group Lecchi- On Convalesence in the Italian Alps, this Detachment has proven itself in North Africa and is undergoing new training in Mountain warfare where it was joined by the Elite Alpni troops to also train them in Anti tank warfare before being sent to Russia. It was supposed to be a restful exercise....
This battle group consists of 2 M13/41's with veteran crews, 3 Squads of highly trained Alpini,The Stalwart luitenant Lecchi, a Machine gun section, a Anti tank sectin with a 47mm ATG and finally the trusty Conscipt detachment that fled North Africa with Lecchi's battlegroup looking of a new home as the British have destroyed there homes and lives. Local air support was supplied by a Macchi 202.

Contact- 10 am 8th February.
Report in- Macchi 202 pilot (Capt.Farr)-Extremly heavy snow storm approaching from approaching from West also large body of Troops? approaching Lecchi's position. Last Report from Macchi. (Wreakage to be found)
Contact- Spring 218 BC
Report In- Massive White out storm has passed over Group Lecchi.
heavy snow on ground visibility good.
Lecchi grabs his binoculars scanning the horizon, the Macchi Pilot reported troops advancing (probably Xth corp again he thought).
Focusing the lenses he saw horsemen? Negro Horsemen, what is going on.
Alpini troop 1 and the conscripts are sent on a recon to see who these horsemen are.
Contact- Spring 218 BC Day? time 2pm by Lecchi's wristwatch.
Radio report in from Alpini Detachment- Horsemen have engaged Alpini with javelins, light casulaties (One graze on a junior officers arm). Have Captured a prisoner, he speaks an old form of Libyan (The conscripts understand him, he keeps mentioning Hannibal and Carthage). Alpini and Conscripts return back to base.

5pm Camp Established-
Lecchi ponders what is going on? Bizarre thoughts, Time Warp? Facing Hannibals army as it crosses the Alps to Attack Rome? What if I stopped them would History be changed? Now he wishes he had listened in History Class.
6pm Defencive primeter formed. Darkness and Rain begins to fall.

3am Rain continuing just loud enough to mask the sound of the approaching Balearica Slingers and Elephants.

With minimal noise they creep up to the pickets, Silent and Accurate Slings take out The Conscript guards. Then the CHARGE, Horns blow the grounds tremble as the Slingers take aim and the Elephants aim for the tanks and trample on tents. Hannibal is the master. And the elephants wreak havoc, the tanks caught without crews are upturned.

5am Lecchi gathers what troops he can find, The Conscripts have disintergrated and fled furter up the mountains, all that is left are the 3 squads of Alpini and the MG group.
That's enough he thought, Revenge and a opportunity to change history.

6am Hannibal flushed wth success of the Slingers examines the strange weapons of the 'Romans" and restarts his long march.

10am Alpini knowing the region well suggests to Lecchi that he ambushes the Carthaginians on one of the Narrowest paths across the mountains. Lecchi looking for revenge, agrees.
12am AMBUSH

The Alpini know where the best place for an ambush or even cause an avalance. Brilliant thought Lecchi, use the AT gun to block the path with High Explosive Rounds as the Elephants pass.
Kaboom, a well placed shot snaps the path in half sending an Elelphant tumbling down the mountain side. The Pass is Blocked.
The Alpini open up, small arms taking a high toll of the Carthaginians on the winding path.
THEN from above the path arrived another army. Throwing rocks onto the Carthaginians below. Lecchi grabbing his binoculars looks carefully at this new army, is it Friend or Foe? He guessed that they were Gauls who also yearned for revenge on Hannibal.
That was it, Hannibals army disintergrated and left the mountain ranges with 80 per cent casualties.
As Lecchi and his troops stared congratulating themselves they found themselves in another blinding snowstorm....
As if nothing happened they are now training for the Recapture of Britain.

Prologue: As The Carthaginians never made it into Roman territory and therefore the Romans didn't endure the the horrible defeat at Cannae, with these troops and having Carthage defeated earlier,Rome could spread its wings faster and Further. Back in 1942 The Roman Empire still exists and still controls Egypt, Turkey, Austria, Romania and North Africa, she is planning a reconquest of Britian with her German Auxillia Troops under the Command of Senator Hitler.
