Post subject: Creativity Challenge no3: Make a War At Sea map - closed
|
|
|
Time to start the 3rd Creativity Challenge, while we're still voting for the first one ( http://aaminis.myfastforum.org/about787.html ).
The new challenge is to make a War at Sea Map that can be used for online gaming. It won't be used in the Olympics, so don't make it so that it suits your Admiral . It will be used in the online games though, so make it usable, make it fun, make it interesting, and not overcomplicated.
The limit is 800x800 pixels for the whole of the image, so that it doesn't overstretch the thread space in this forum for those with lower resolutions.
The prettier the better. The more usable the better.
Some sort of Grid system is a must.
The deadline for this is: March 2, Sunday night Pacific Time. _________________

I might polish this a little more before the deadline, but:
I've also adapted all my other board designs to this format, so they'd all be available for playing online. And they still tile with each other. _________________

Maybe some embellishment around the map or as background, so that it isn't so simple. Like pirate maps .

I can do that - the reasoning behind the simple layout and the plain edges was that it allows you to combine maps for larger battles. _________________

The days are passing and I see only one entry here. Do you want to give the 7 pts so easily to EK and let the 5, 4, 3, 2pts slip away? _________________

Maybe you ought to cancel it, it's a bit unfair otherwise (especially since all I had to to was resize my earlier work and slap on co-ordinates).
Perhaps you could add some general "minimum entries" clause - and invoke it _________________

Hm, we'll see. I'm surprised that thee are so few entries though, since this will be useful for all our online games. I'm sure they can't use forever the 2 I've made for the olympics, and Aquarius, for example, had made some very practical ones in the past. _________________

| I think carrion is working on an entry. I sneaked a peek yesterday and they look sweeet! I gotta get him to release those on cafepress so I can buy them. He needs information on the WaSea grid (size and placement) as he doesn't yet have the maps (he plays mine when we get together). I was going to email him the grid info but am having a tough time finding a RULER in my disorganized house to measure them!!! C'mon, someone help him out so we can see his maps!! |

The original ones (and mine) are 3.5". Some people suggest using 4", though in my experience that makes it quite hard to print a reasonably-sized map on reasonably-sized paper. As always, YMMV.
What little I have seen of carrion's work so far has been outstanding, so I'm looking forward to these. Any chance of a sneak peek? _________________

Here's the one that I used (note the past tense )
Each ship is linked to its label, and they are each in their own layer, making movement of ships easy. This is a .jpg copy, I can email the original to anyone who wants it.
And if people would prefer, I can upload the standard sized one, too. _________________ I have to make a new sig because my old one is too wide for this new look... |

Quick question in the game WAS one section equals how many miles or kilometers. Do not own the rules but would like to know. Thank you in advance. _________________

Here's my entry.
The map is based on Vella Gulf, just west of New Georgia in the Solomons. North is to the left. The island to the east is Kolombangara. Vella Lavella is to the west. The smaller island to the south is Gizo.
Vella Gulf isn't quite as storied as Ironbottom Sound, but there were quite a few battles in these waters during the New Georgia campaign. In addition to the Battle of Vella Gulf, which took place in the waters represented on the map, the Battles of Kula Gulf, Kolombangara, and Vella Lavella took place nearby. |
