Sic transit gloria Britannica.
Well played sir!
The gunnery gods were with me once more, but I was terrified at mid-game when your torpedo barrage and smoke cover could have turned the tide (especially when Canberra refused to be sunk). _________________

I know. I feel kinda bad about it, and I hope Spruance gets toned down for the next event. Perhaps something like "submit 2 builds, then select one after seeing your opponent's". I fear I'm basically doomed to stick to Iowa, since I can basically counter anything except big BBs.
Good luck on the AAM side of the Olympics! _________________

I'm still not convinced that EK progressed because of the admiral (won the first match with a very low-probability vital-armor hit against the VV, and didn't win easily this one), but if I get convinced until the end of the cup, then I have already thought of the correction.
All admirals are subject to corrections and some more will be added after the cup. We'll see. _________________

Yeah, I thought of that, but had dismissed the idea thinking it was quite difficult to implement fairly: which 50% do I get to see? Big units first? Small?
Though come to think of it, there's a good way: at least 50%, opponent's choice. So in this case you would have had to show me Rodney. It's an advantage, but it doesn't tell me whether I should bring Dauntlesses, Fletchers or Barbs along with the big boy. _________________

Well, the admiral certainly doesn't guarantee a win - but it gives a huge advantage if the enemy fields a specialised fleet (wolfpack, air-heavy, torpedo sward, etc), as Spruance can pick the perfect counter.
So in most cases the logical (and, in my opinion, tactically sound) option is to go for a BB fleet. Still, few BBs can fight toe to toe with Iowa. Yamato, of course, and Rodney if she can make effective use of smoke or get a couple of torpedo hits from the escorts (12 points difference).
On the other hand, going for this strategy usually means abandoning the Admiral ability. Not always - Bergamini's ability gave VV a fantastic boost, it would have been a close game. Kurita's discounts mean he can field Yamato and Kongo for 97 points. And Tovey (Sir Not-Appearing-In-This-Film) not only helps bridge the gunnery gap, but also gives an extra oomph to torpedoes. Other than that, they all boost specialised fleets.
Having said that, Sprague is terrifying and Masterchief plays a mean game... the next match will be interesting! _________________

To be honest i thought i had a chance once i had objectives all i need to do was shoot a plane down, not to be. I chose Rodney so i had some idea of what you would use, and hoped for some lucky dice. _________________

Yes, I figured that bit out
In principle I was hoping to get at least one objective, or at least stop you getting it, which would allow me to use the Dauntlesses freely. If I had to concede both, then I'd stop the air attacks except against Canberra or the destroyers. And certainly no pressing the attack.
At close range, Rodney and Iowa are essentially tied - both will always damage the other, though Iowa has a slightly higher (but not dependable) chance of vitalling Rodney. So for me it was important to stay at range 3, but that meant risking the objectives and thus the Dauntlesses.
Anyhow it was a very tough match - If I had to find one mistake on your part, all I can think of is leaving the cover of smoke to claim the north objective on turn 3, after winning initiative. Closing in was good for Nelson's guns, but it did not compensate for the loss of concealment - and you were unnecessarily risking a torpedo strike from the PT boat. A bold move, but very risky. _________________
