USSR 1941 – Blokada Leningrada

So, after a long wait got some time to post a scenario for this map. The scenario is similar to the Libya 1941 - Op. Sunflower since tends to be more of a dynamic campaign type of scenario.
The scenario in its actual form had little testing, but gives the players that have this map some sort of Guideline. Of course, after a little testing, improved variants will follow and will be posted here.

Quote:
1. Introduction

The Siege of Leningrad, also known as The Leningrad Blockade was an unsuccessful military operation by the Axis powers to capture Leningrad during World War II. By August 1941 all railway lines to Leningrad were severed, and the city was encircled on land by Finnish armies to the north and German troops to the south.
The siege started at 9 September 1941, when the last land connection to the city was severed. American Lend-Lease food and material supplies to Leningrad began in the last quarter of 1941, while British and American convoys to Murmansk increased this support in 1942 and 1943, providing aid to the remaining civilians and Soviet defenders of the besieged city. During the three successive winters starting with 1941/42, the ice cover on Lake Ladoga was used to relieve the city. Although Soviets managed to open a narrow land corridor to the city at 18 January 1943, the total lifting of the siege happened at 27 January 1944, 872 days after it began.
The Siege of Leningrad was one of the longest and most destructive sieges of major cities in modern history and it was the second most costly in terms of casualties.

Quote:
2. Axis Objective

Capture the “Leningrad defensive perimeter” and reinforce this position. Then, attack the suburbs of Leningrad, by conquering the two objectives. Complete the siege on the city by holding the “Leningrad defensive perimeter” and repel all enemy efforts to relieve the city.

Quote:
3. Soviet Objective

Hold the “Leningrad defensive perimeter” against Axis aggression for at least 4 turns. If needed, retreat inside the city afterwards and hold the position at all costs. Relief operations will be launched with the aim of pushing back the enemy beyond the “Leningrad siege perimeter” and free the besieged city.

4. Army Builds

Soviet Army - Leningrad Front 1941 (220 pt)
1x T35
Most of the T-35 tanks still operational at the time of Operation Barbarossa were lost due to mechanical failure rather than enemy action.
4x T26 B
The T-26 formed the backbone of the Red Army's tank force during the first months of the German invasion of the Soviet Union.
1x BT7
The Red Army planned to replace the BT tank series with the T-34 and had just begun doing so when the German invasion took place.
1x Zis-5 3 Ton
1x BA-10M

7x Mosin Nagant
4x Degtyarev
2x Communist Partisan
On 27 June 1941 the Council of Deputies of the Leningrad administration organized "First response groups" of civilians. In the next days the entire civilian population of Leningrad was informed of the danger and over a million citizens were mobilized.
3x Commissar
3x PPSh 41 SMG
3x PTRD 41 AT Rifle

Germany – Army Group North 1941 (376 pt)
The capture of Leningrad was one of three strategic goals in Hitler's initial plan, codenamed Operation Barbarossa, for invading and conquering the Soviet Union. Hitler's strategy was motivated by Leningrad's political status as the former capital of Russia and the symbolic capital of the Russian Revolution, its military importance as a main base of the Soviet Baltic Fleet and its industrial strength, housing numerous arms factories. The siege was conducted by Wehrmacht troops associated with Army Group North, with assistance from the Finnish Army, as part of Barbarossa, which was launched on 22 June 1941. The siege followed the Finnish offensive in Karelia, and the German offensive on southern suburbs of Leningrad. Once the offensive portion stopped and the 4th Panzer Group had left for Moscow, the Germans started to dig in as a preparation for executing the siege.
2x SdKfz 251
*2x StuG III D
1x StuG III D
The StuG III assault gun was Germany's most produced armored fighting vehicle during World War II. Sturmgeschütz units held a very impressive record of tank kills – some 20,000 enemy tanks by the spring of 1944.
*2x Panzer III F
Around the time of Operation Barbarossa, the Panzer III was numerically the most important German tank. At this time the majority of the available tanks (including re-armed Ausf. E and F, plus new Ausf. G and H models) had the 50-millimetre KwK L/42 cannon.

1x Panzer II F
*1x Panzer II Flamingo

The Bf 109 was produced in greater quantities than any other fighter aircraft in history, with a total of 33,984 units produced up to April 1945.
***1x Long range artillery bombardment
---
* High Command Directive: 4th Panzer units will be taken out of play at the end of the turn after the “Leningrad defensive perimeter” is taken from the soviets.
** Raid: These units are allowed to make one attack per game, attack that must be resolved during the first 4 turns of the game.
*** Long range artillery bombardment: Axis player can choose any land target in range in the Assault phase and attack it with 10 dice. Special abilities: Inaccurate 1, Shrapnel 2, Blast and Bombardment.
Range: any land hex. Available during the first 4 turns of the game.

Finish Army 1941 (30 pt)
The proximity of the Finnish army's positions - 33-35 kilometers from the center of Leningrad — and the threat of a Finnish attack complicated the defense of the city.
1x Finish Officer
1x Finish MG
5x Finish Infantry

Soviet Army – Sinyavin Offensive 1942 (145 pt)
In August 1942, another operation for capturing Leningrad code named Operation Nordlicht was planned by the Germans, but the Sinyavin Offensive by the Red Army pre-empted Nordlicht.

2x T70
1x Maxim M1910 MG
4x Mosin Nagant

Germany – Operation Nordlicht 1942 (172 pt)
Operation Nordlicht was to begin on 23 August 1942, but when the Soviets launched the Sinyavin Offensive on 19 August, the forces that were intended to be used for Nordlicht were transferred from the planned offensive to the defense of the German lines. Although the Sinyavin Offensive was a failure, it caused the Germans to cancel Operation Nordlicht and would never be able to launch an offensive against Leningrad.

2x MG42 Machine Gun
The MG42 entered service with the Wehrmacht in 1942 and was manufactured until the end of the war. It had a proven record of reliability, durability, simplicity, and ease of operation, but was most notable for being able to produce a stunning volume of suppressive fire.
4x Mauser Kar
2x Luftwaffe Infantry
**1x Me110
**1x FW190 A
1x Long range artillery bombardment
----
** Raid2: These units are allowed to make two attacks (per game) in the 6th and 7th turns, if not destroyed.

Range: any land hex.

Soviet Army – Operation Iskra 1943 (224 pt)
The encirclement of Leningrad was broken in the wake of Operation Iskra - a full-scale offensive conducted by the Leningrad and Volkhov Fronts. This offensive started in the morning of January 12, 1943.
2x T34/76
The T-34 was among the most important weapons systems in the Red Army in World War II. At the time it was first fielded, it was easily the finest tank design in the world. By mid-war the T-34 was no longer technically superior to its opponents, but it was still effective in combat.
1x T34/76 Commander
1x SU-122
The first SU-122s produced in December 1942 were sent to two new combat units, the 1433rd and 1434th self-propelled artillery regiments. In January 1943, these self-propelled artillery regiments were sent to the Volkhov Front near Leningrad.

Germany – Army Group North Reserves 1943 (150 pt)
1x Junkers 87 G „Stuka“
With the G variant the aging airframe of the Ju 87 found new life as an anti-tank aircraft. This was the final operational version of the Stuka and was deployed on the Eastern Front.
1x Me Ace
1x StuG III ausf G
1x Panzer IV ausf G “Early”
The Panzer IV was originally intended to be a support tank. It was thus armed with a 75mm howitzer intended primarily to fire high explosive in support of other tanks. By 1942, it was rearmed with a longer 75 mm dual-purpose gun which could defeat most Soviet tanks. In the second half of the war, about half of all German tanks were Pzkw IVs.
1x Hummel
The Hummel was designed in 1942 out of a need for mobile artillery support for the tank forces, the lack of which had first been felt during Operation Barbarossa. It was used by the Wehrmacht during the Second World War from late 1942 until the end of the war.
2x Panzerschreck
2x Fortress Defender
1x Wehrmacht Oberlt
4x Mauser Kar

Quote:
5. Scenario Plot

Soviet Army - Leningrad Front 1941 will deploy first in the “Leningrad defensive perimeter”; these units cannot retreat inside the city perimeter in the first 4 turns.

Germany – Army Group North 1941 will deploy second in its deployment area (see map). The objective is to conquer the “Leningrad defensive perimeter” by destroying all enemy units present there or forcing them to abandon the position. After this objective is achieved, Axis units will hold position inside the perimeter and 4th Panzer armored units will be transferred to Army Group Center.
Once the “Leningrad defensive perimeter” is conquered, Axis forces will try and attack the suburbs of Leningrad. Conquering any 2 objective hexes inside the town will provide reinforcements (15 cost points per objective).

Finish Army 1941 will deploy in its deployment area (see map). If engaged by the Soviet troops, the Finns will activate and join the German forces right away. Else, in order for the German player to activate these troops he must roll two dice beginning of each turn. If the roll is 9+ these troops will join the Axis operations, else they will stay inactive.

Soviet Army – Sinyavin Offensive 1942 will deploy before the beginning of 6th turn in the deployment area. All units must attack the German lines with the objective retaking the “Leningrad defensive perimeter”. None of these units are allow to retreat inside the city perimeter at any time.

Germany – Operation Nordlicht 1942 will deploy in its deployment area (see map). These units will reinforce the rest of the German forces and may repel the Soviet counter-attacks.

Soviet Army – Operation Iskra 1943 will deploy before the beginning of 8th turn in the deployment area. The objective is to push the enemy units outside the “Leningrad siege perimeter”.

Germany – Army Group North Reserves 1943 will deploy in its deployment area and will reinforce the Axis troops.

Quote:
6. Dice modifiers/Units Restrictions/Reinforcements

Weather rule: at the beginning of every turn, the player that wins Initiative (or must deploy first) will roll a dice. If the result of the roll is “1”, bad weather occurs in that turn and no airborne units will be deployed.

Reinforcements for conquered objective hexes (Axis only): For any objective hex inside Leningrad that is conquered, 15 cost points can be introduced in play (1941 units only).

Quote:
7. Victory Conditions

Soviet Player Victory: Push back the Axis units beyond the “Leningrad siege perimeter”. Failing to do this gives the victory to the Axis player.

Axis Player Victory:
a) Have at least one unit during any point of the game in the 3 objective hexes inside Leningrad. Or:
b) Avoid being pushed outside the “Leningrad siege perimeter” by the Soviet relief efforts.

How to get the Map?
The map for this scenario is available for sale or trade. For more information PM me or visit my trade topic in the Marketplace (see: http://aaminis.myfastforum.org/about6953.html ).

The Soundtrack for the scenario:

Pics from a game on this map, these are not actually pics from testing the scenario (original comments below):
I had a little game USSR 200 pt vs 220 pt Axis combined force, year limit 1942 - historical background. USSR defending Leningrad (actually two objective hexes - red marker), Axis attacking.

The USSR player decided on a tank heavy build (2x T34, 1x KV1, 1x AMMO, 2x Heavy mortar, 1x hero, 1x cossak cpt, 1x sniper, 1x artillery in pillbox, the rest being grenadiers, nagants and partisans).

Axis decided to go all infantry - no vehicles or artillery what so ever. The reason being that the battle would have been more into the medium/close range with lots of cover places. SS Stormtroopers, SS Panzergren's , 2x SS Hauptst, Romanian Grens, 1x Fucile, Mauser Kars, 2x Vet Paratroopers, German Hero, 1x MG42, 1x Pioneer, 1xFlammenwerfer, all in all 40 infantry pieces + an AMMO dump).

The Axis (brilliantly led by the RedBaron) had a little problem entering the town, we had to pass through clear hexes in front of the enemy guns, but that achieved, the things got worse for the defenders.

Though a little mobility in the Axis build wouldn't have hurt (as the Baron's allied player pointed out), the game was won, because the USSR player ran away with it's tanks rather than lose them, ran to fight another day.

Next update: revision after test games and Early War set.

Good, but as you see, you can't see the white hexes on white snow. Black colour is not used yet.

They are visible, on the actual printed map they come out in a grey tone (grayscale).

Cool. Cool

at first i thought it was sea covered by clouds and feared there would be little playable hexes.

looks good.

Could also be a leningrad area scenario.

He's right, that map would perfectly fit Leningrad dont you think?

And at least we can make 2 scenarios out of it easily. Leningrad '41, SU is in the defense, but has some nice KV-1s or even KV-2 if you want to play with inofficial cards and minis.
And Leningrad '44 where Soviets push the germans back and never see them again.

Alternatively you could use Moscow '41 and the SU counterattack, but then i would ask for what the sea hexes stand for...

But the map is, once again, beautiful!

Well then, Leningrad it is. If I ain't mistaking, Leningrad (actually Sankt Petersburg) is a Port, so it fits.
Only I believe that Romanian, Italian and Hungarian troops would not fit the picture... buuuut we could have Finish troops. And those will blend in nicely.

@ Westentaschenschlachti

I want to inform you that Santa Claus is american propaganda!! Forget about him! This year no Santa Claus for you!

But, because you seem like a nice guy who studies and will help Romania when he will enjoy the spoils of Austrian Political Power, you are not forgotten: the Romanian "Mos Gerila" whose location is not exactly known (believed to be living in the forests of Transilvania) sent you some... maps. And no, that is not BigFoot, also american propaganda!!  I believe that in the Package are the Leningrad map, D-DAY map (the one that won in a controversial way the Olimpics) and some survival gear for the desert in case your tank breaks down near Tobruk, meaning Romanian Holy Water. And no, it is not Gatorade... yes, that is american propaganda.

Laughing

Regards,

When Romania is put back into the Axis and high command sends me with some leopards to your country i will bring some presents with me - and no, no leather trousers. All Austrians wearing these clothes is american propaganda, you know.  Shocked  Laughing But yes, we all listen to Mozart of course Cool  Laughing

Apart from the joke, we could use some Leopards... the Romanian Army has some (2-3 Laughing ) Abhrams tanks, but those are... yes, you are right, american propaganda.

Let me know when you receive the package, someone printed the maps and then sent them to you in my name, since I was out of town. I did not see actually the maps before they were sent to you, but I believe everything is OK. DDAY map was printed in High Quality, Leningrad map gives the felling of "the end of the world" I was told since it has a dark feeling when you look at it printed. Now that is interesting Smile

Mozart is fine, but I like very v. v. much EdenBridge that is an Austrian Band. Wink

Regards,

Axis HQ Romania.

When speaking about modern tanks, I ordered just a few Leopard 2 A5 and A6 and Russian T80s Minis. I hope i can bring Sindor to make a few rules and fine cards for modern warfare in A&A style. Of course this would be played on your outstanding maps
Very Happy

Well, i stay at a friends house and wont be at home for about a week from now, but i had a look at OP. Adjacent map yesterday again (yes, took it with me lol) and think i wont seriously play on other maps than these satellite maps anymore. Even more if there are constantly new maps in the pipe. Who else bought/traded your maps so far btw?

So, when i receive them next week i will put some pictures online...a scenario game on the Op.adjacent map and a diorama on Winterstorm. And these maps are the 2" ones, arent they?

About the music thing yes..i know them. I used to listen to metal when i was a teenager. Bands like Nightwish, Tristania or Rammstein were my favorites. But i switched back to electronic music like Progressive Trance & Deep House.

Do you know Dash Berlin?

All maps I have sent you are 2" (aprox. 5 cm).

Maps that I have sent to people from this forum (like Hoth, von Richthofen and such) are 3".

I am lacking 2x Higgins Boat and some Jeeps and that is so annoying for the DDAY scenario. But soon enough I must post some wonderful pics with op. Trident. And when I say "wonderful" I mean spectacular.

Well, I am a metal only man, so to speak, I do not like that much the... house type of sound. EdenBridge are ... well Heaven so to speak and yes, Rammstein are among favorites.

You should be careful, trance/house have american propaganda in them!

Better listen to your comrades from Germany, they say like this:
"We're all living in Amerika
Coca Cola
Sometimes war
We're all living in Amerika
Amerika"
Laughing

...but this is american propaganda so i dont give a thing  Very Happy

But theres a very cool thing: i received your maps today. Went to the post office and thought it would be the parcel with the new minis which i'm already waiting for so long and didnt receive yet, but then the postguy put a big envelope in my hands and said "beware american propaganda" and i knew it must be from you  Laughing

So...after tearing the envelope brutally away i put the d-day map on my table. Great! Cool! Awesome! Then i put the Leningrad map on the table. Great! Cool! Magnifique! Then i put the...HUH? WTF? A third map? I already have the French Earlywar map so whats this? You said something about the desert but this would be to cool to be .....YES! It is a Tobruk map. Wide open flat hexes, only a hill in the middle and the georgous harbour in the north. Damn it....D-Day and Leningrad are very cool, but the Tobruk map is the best work you've done so far. And all maps come in 2 parts so you can only use 1 if you decide to make smaller battles.

I need to work today (actually i am at work  Very Happy ), but tomorrow i will force the British in Tobruk to surrender...cant wait for it Wink. On your map the Extended Range >12 makes sense for the first time.

Now we have a Western European map, a D-day map, a Winter and a Desert map. The whole think tank Wizards couldnt do this in 6 years what a single Romanian did in 1 month. Good Job!  Very Happy

Best regards,
West

Hey, Westen, you said it first, so you will have the personal honour do this Expansion set Wink In long term perspective I had in mind making Korea, Vietnam and Irak Sets for AAM, renaming it "Warmongers" instead Wink

But I fear the game will fade out from people's memory sooner than I expected and make it for three four people is probably not worth the effort.

@ West

I wanted to surprise you with the Tobruk map. Of course, the map has a scenario to it that will be posted shortly. This scenario starts with Op. Compass (where the Australians try to capture Tobruk) involves the arrival of Afrika Korps in Africa (op. Sunflower) and its efforts to re-capture Tobruk - the siege of Tobruk. Actually the "Tobruk Scenario" will be the first one that can develop in different ways, in function of the turn out of different battles.
It includes operation Battleaxe and Crusader also.

This "Tobruk Scenario" and the Leningrad one may be the last I do until next year, but with those there will be 4 complete historical scenarios (Ops Adjacent, Trident, WhiteStorm and Sunflower) that take you from the BlitzKrieg of France to the African Battles, Russian Winter and the DDAY landings.
Actually, for me is that simple that every week I could do one Scenario complete of map and all the needed support.

The WotCosts scenarios are more or less a joke as their marketing strategy. Cartoon maps that are played to death in various forms... The Mao guy should look here also. This community could help a lot in developing this game.

So I set down to my computer before going outside to mow my lawn and see this huge map of Leningrad.  The map is so much better than the ones I have right now.  That could be why I don't really like to use them anymore.  Or it could be that I am in love with the 3D terrain I build.  Anyway, how many 8x11 sheets do these maps use?  Just trying to get an idea of the cost to print them.  And how large of a table would I need to lay these down on?  My current table is 4x6.  And last but most important, how much does one pay to get quality like this.  In one way it would be a step backwards from the 3D, but it would be light years ahead of my WotC maps for when my 2D friends show up and want to play.  I lay one of these down and it might make their heads explode. lol

Satellite maps are not comparable to wotc cartoon maps, I assure you. Cartoon wotc maps are just that...cartoons, on the other hand, satellite maps have real 2D landscape. It's almost like playing another game.

2D maps and 3D maps cannot be compared because they are different things. 3D maps for sure have a different feel to it, a different set up, though I believe they are limited to small skirmishes, due to the set-up limits. I never played 3D because I did not have the chance, but maybe someday I will.

The Leningrad map (and the others) is (are) almost 4 sqm of printed paper (composed from 4x A0 sheets). I've sent out a few "promotion" maps without any trade in mind at first, to a bunch of people who wanted to try them. After this phase I started to trade these maps for 2 rares (or a combination of rare+unc+c). Right now, due to high demand, production costs and low possibility of producing these maps, I had to ask for 3 rares a map (or a combo).

I must say I'm really getting sold on the maps and scenarios you are putting up...  I wish I could play them.  In good time I guess... when I can get this printed out at a local printshop.  But keep up the great work and I for one look forward to more of your projects.
