Post subject: Storage for Models Needed, How do You Store Them for Travel? Reply with quote   (Liked by:0)  Like this post
I am looking to change from my Keter MasterCart toolbox for storing my WAS models, dice, and etc to something else.  I have been thinking about those clear plastic utility boxes with compartments but cannot find any.  Perhaps I'm looking at the wrong places (Lowes, Home Depot, Walmart, Kohl's, AC Moore).

What do you guys use to store your WAS models when you go gaming?  Where did you get it?  Was it expensive?  How else do you store your models?  What is your storage system?

As you can see in my sig I have over 520 models that I bring with me to game.  Plus, cotton balls (for smoke), several starter boxes worth of dice and islands and tokens (soon to be replaced with Litko WAS tokens and smoke screens).

I also bring the rulebook, quick start rules, all the FAQ and Rules & Updates Clarifications documents, and a notebook but this stuff can be kept in my messenger bag.  Plus, a binder with all the stat cards but I'll be switching that to a baseball card cardboard box soon because the binder isn't holding up.

However, I'm mainly interested in finding a solution to store my models.  Below is a picture of the Keter MasterCart.  I only bring the top half with me and store all my ships in plastic bags inside.  The aircraft go in the part in front.  As you can imagine it is quite large even with just the top part.  And, using plastic bags for the ships is less than desirable.  It has proven difficult making sure everything goes where it belongs and is nigh impossible to keep track of how much stuff I have.  Doing inventory is a mess.

I'll be going out today to Target and another go at AC Moore but I'm not optimistic.  Hopefully you guys will be able to help me out by saying what you use.

Thanks!

I checked the Sports section (thinking maybe they have them for tackle boxes), home storage, and wherever they keep the Rubbermaid under the bed type containers.  In AC Moore I looked in the scrapbooking section, yarn, and sewing sections but also did a once around the entire store.

I even tried Bed, Bath and Beyond in their bathroom and storage sections.

JFKgiezler: How do you fit everything in there?  Do you divide the units up a certain way?  Where do you store aircraft?  And, do you have a rough idea of how many models you have?

Duck Crusader: Any suggestion on where to find those Plano modular boxes?

Certain sections of the box are bigger or smaller than others.  I keep the smaller pieces like destroyers in the smaller sections, and the bigger pieces like carriers in the bigger sections.  I also keep any extra pieces I don't normally use in a spares box that I keep in the bottom with my rules and terrain pieces.  I store aircraft together in the normal sections, and especially in the seventh tray, which doesn't really fit much else.  I keep one box for my Axis and one box for my Allies.  I probably have roughly three hundred pieces stored and another hundred or so in the spares boxes, but those are rough estimates.

The 'Cadillac' is the Flambeau Quickdraw 8010 front loader. I replaced the double-deep drawer with two regular drawers. That gives you four drawers. I have U.S. in one, Japan in another, France/Commonwealth in the third drawer, and Germany/Italy in the fourth. I am sure I have at least 400-500 minis. But it is full. So I will have to re-adjust when Set III is released.

I originally bought it for Mechwarrior. The double-deep drawer was perfect for the mechs and the shallow drawers for infantry and vehicles. The shallow drawers are the perfect height for WaS ships and aircraft, and you can adjust the dividers for length. So I replaced the double-deep by purchasing some extra shallow drawers.

Pricey though. Wally-world used to sell them, but switched to Plano. You can buy them on this link if you wish. Several of our group have these.

Plano tackle boxes. I use the 3-drawer model. Fits my US, IJN and Italian forces - about 400 units total. Got it at Wal-Mart for $45 and well worth it. You have trays for big ships - bottom tray for CVs, middle tray for BBs/CAs, top tray for CLs and DDs. There's also smaller sections in the trays for subs and other small ships. You have small boxes you can use for the side compartment and also for inside the main storage area.  The sectioned compartments on the lid are perfect for aircraft.  And inside the main storage area, you have room for cards (unit, island, admiral) and calculator, a flat space for the maps, rulebook and a notepad for builds.  Using a small box, you'll also have a perfect space for dice, tokens and zip-line for line of sight rulings.

http://www.amazon.com/Plano-Moldi...ods&qid=1238298048&sr=1-3

EDIT - P.S. I still have room to expand US, IJN and Italian.

Big'ole tackle-box, 6 fold-out rows (from Plano) (one side houses Japanese, other side houses Americans + Commonwealth/UK), with room in the bottom for several of the small "tackle divider boxes" (the Plano ones...2 large, 3 medium, 2 small) that have all my airforces, german, french, and italian fleets.

Cards are in a card album.

As for how many units....let's see....554 units

Gee, I toss the ships into a bunch of former HP network equipment boxes (1 per nation), pack those into a larger box originally filled with industrial-strength toilet paper from Sam's, and throw that in the back of my van. I mean, they're plastic!

I keep track of what I own on my computer. Every now and then I look through the boxes to see if I've missed anything.

I found a great one at Walmart but it was damaged.  The guy at the store said "we only have a few, they're on the shelf, don't restock until those are gone" and was less than helpful even after I explained the one on the shelf was damaged.

It is Plano Magnum Hip Roof Six Tray for $19.96.  I think the sku is 024099086165.  The 8916 or 8616.

The reviews on Walmart.com list the negatives for that Plano 8616 as being it is all plastic and the trays don't hold a lot of weight before the supports snap off the tracks (someone weighed theirs and 22lbs was its breaking limit)

BTW, that Flambeau cadillac one is back at Walmart...I think and for $28.88.

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=7941712

The reviews for this are solid, and overall it is 4.5 stars and the Plano is 4ish stars, with people saying it holds a lot of stuff.  Is http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=10569384 the shallow trays you used to replace the deep one?

Both look good to me but the Plano 8616 looks like it holds more, but maybe not, than the Flambeau Kwikdraw Front Loader.

I don't want whatever I get to break over night and would like it to be durable.  I'll be getting married next year and want to make sure it will last the move and be usable afterwards (not take up much room, we'll probably start in an apartment, etc).  Honestly the Flambeau didn't impress me much when I saw it in store but I could have been underestimating it.

I'm definitely choosing between the two...not sure which one though.

The plano one is the exact one I have, and it works fine.  It'll easily hold your 520 units if you use the space in the bottom for the extra smaller cases (as I said earlier, all my aircraft, french, german, and italian ships are in those smaller ones).  Even before that, I was able to fit all my ships and about half my aircraft in the 6 fold-out trays...it was just a bit less organized (my current set-up has the US destroyers with one tray per type...hoel, fletcher, laffey, sammy b., butler)...same with the Jap DDs.  CLs in their own section, etc.

Another vote for the Plano style boxes.  I use the clear ones also from Wal-mart.  Each new set gets 3 large boxes for WAS and 1 large and 1 medium for AAM v1 and now 2 large for v2..

There's a link to some of their boxes. The kind Seisen and I use hold four boxes and nothing else, just a rack for the boxes themselves. The beauty of these is you don't need more carriers, just the boxes. Then you can bring just what you want and leave the rest stacked up at home.

I use boxes very much like Afilters, I recently switched from four of the thinner ones over to two deeper ones, I probably don't have quite as many minis as you, but these things are modular, you make the holes the size you want.  If you've got a bag/backpack you can put stuff in, I think the plain trays are the way to go since they're definately cheaper than the full tackle boxes, under five bucks a piece in the fishing section at Walmart.

Agreed, I have one red tackle bag that easily fits 4 large boxes with pocets for other and maps dice etc.

I have my pieces in Plano boxes that I picked up at Target. Note that I think Walmart only carries Plano in their fishing section and only in season. I bought a smaller Plano box at Walmart last summer but when I went back this winter they had nothing. Target carries the 3750 and 3650 models. The 3700 series model numbers are the bigger boxes (8.5x14xY) where Y is a variable depth that is dependent on the last two digits of the model number. The 3650 is 7x11x2. The good thing about these two particular models is that each has a row of larger spaces that are perfect for ships (4.5" long). I have each country in a box. US and Japan in their own 3750s. UK and Germany in their own 3650s. The final box is for the Italians and French with a couple Canadians and Australians thrown in. I probably have about half the pieces you have but I'm sure if I went with all 3750s I could hold the number of pieces that you have. I also have a smaller box (3500) that I use to hold all my Litko markers and smoke screens. I just throw all these in one of those reusable shopping bags and I'm good to go.

Shoot me a PM and I'll send you my ship organization templates. I print these out on full page labels and stick them inside the cover of the Plano box. They show each section of the box and what units are supposed to be in each section. I have pictures of all the pieces that I cut and pasted from the Wizards Gallery to make finding what I want easy and making sure everything gets put back where it goes. Before, this was a bit of an unnecessary luxury but with Set II having all the repaints it is an absolute requirement. It greatly speeds up set-up.

That is the Flambeau and you have the correct additional drawers too. That is about 2/3 the price I had to pay on-line at the Flambeau store. I might just pick up another one now! It does have a very large top storage section. It has plenty of room to store dice, terrain, rule books, etc. Even more ships and planes.

I do like the idea of the plastic trays in the nylon bags. It is a lighter solution than the tackle boxes, but they don't have the big top storage for accessories that the Flambeau box has. It is a matter of taste. I think the key overall is to have the removable boxes with adjustable dividers and lids. I don't like the open fold-out trays because your minis can go flying in every direction if you accidentally drop it. Plus the removable boxes allow you to organize and store your minis as mentioned by several people. Right now I can bring all my collection to a game in the tackle box. (And I have a big collection!) But after Set III comes out I will have to swap trays depending on what I am playing that day. This is inevitable with more sets.
