Post subject: Breakout! A Bismarck/Tirpitz Scenario
|

|
I tried out an interesting what if scenario tonight. What would have happened if a sizeable German force had accompanied the Bismarck on its breakout run.
I set it up in three phases. In phase one, the German forces had to win the Battle of the Denmark Strait. In phase two, the German forces encountered Force H. And in phase three, the Germans had to make it through the British home fleet and into the coastal waters of France.
German Forces:
Bismarck, Tirpitz, Scharnhorst, Gneisenau, Prinz Eugen
British Forces, Phase 1:
Hood, Prince of Wales, Norfolk, Suffolk
British Forces, Phase 2:
Ark Royal, Swordfish x2, Renown, Sheffield
British Forces, Phase 3:
Victorious, Swordfish x1, Dorsetshire, Repulse, King George V, Rodney
Special Scenario Rules:
1) Forumini cards are recommended for any unit not yet produced in War at Sea. Some, such as Gneisenau or PoW, could simply be second copies of other cards (Scharnhorst, KGV).
2) In each phase, the goal of the German forces is to get from one end of the map to the other, while the goal of the British forces is to inflict as much damage on them as possible. Each force begins at one end of the map, as in a standard War at Sea game.
3) For the Germans, damage is retained from phase to phase. For the British, ships do not carry over from one phase to the next.
Victory Conditions:
-Germans: Bring either Bismarck or Tirpitz successfully to the end of the map on the third phase.
-British: Sink both the Bismarck and the Tirpitz.
On my first run through, the Germans mauled their way through, losing Bismarck and Prinz Eugen, but getting Tirpitz successfully through to the end with Scharnhorst and Gneisenau vicrtually untouched. The British lost all their Swordfish, plus Hood, PoW, KGV, and Rodney. If anyone else decides to try it, I would be interested to hear how it comes out for you. _________________
