Since I enjoyed the 1/1800 Kongo build so much, I've decided to hit another perineal favorite of mine, Scharnhorst. Of course 3D printed.

Same list of ingredients as Kongo, PE and scratch building the lower hull, masts etc. I like small scale full-hull models. You just don't see them much beyond 1/700 and even that is more rare than not.

Parts are starting to trickle in so it's time to get started. I'll make this a WIP so that folks can follow along if they like.

I settled on Summer 1942. I had a couple of paint scheme choice for a later Scharnhorst, and while I like the camouflage she wore when she was sunk, it will make an already small, busy, model look even more so, so I don't think I'll be doing anything complex. The dark grey with white bow and stern will look stark and show off her lines better on this scale.

So we are gonna go with the top scheme. Stark, I like stark.

Camouflage we will NOT be using. Although this is a pretty good photo taken of her before the admiral's bridge was rebuilt.

This is more like it.

Some shots of my 1/2400 GHQ Scharnhorst. As you can see I've already done the as-lost scheme, so I wanna try something different.

Little diorama I call "straddled"

Thanks! But we haven't even started yet!

I think by Thursday evening I'll have everything I need to get cracking.

Land gamer here, but I do look at all 3 modeling topics. Some beautiful work by many people.

These are amazing, seeing the coin for scale really does it!

So I had a moment. I realized that aoshima and heller both made 1/2000 full hull Tirpitz kits. I need a lower hull for my Scharnhorst and instead of a full scratch, I've purchased both kits and I'll be using whichever one is best. They scale out almost perfect for Scharnhorst's dimensions. The other kit will either be a parts bin special or a weekend build. Heck, I may actually spend some time on it if it isn't half bad.

Luckily at least the Aoshima offering has the lower hull as a seperate piece (or pieces). So, some putty and some sanding and we should have results. Everything should be here by Saturday at the latest. I'll have the Heller and Aoshima Tirpitz kits tomorrow.

Alright boys and girls, I should have the 3d Scharnhorst tomorrow. But better news is the Heller and Aoshima kits arrived today and I'm going to be using the Aoshima lower hull. Looks great. Some sanding and filling required but it'll save me an eon of scratch building.

Once I get started, I'm going to fill the lower hull with micro plywood and sand it flush. That way the upper 3d printed portion will be stiffened enough to check the hogging which I'm sure will be present.

On Kongō, I steamed the hull to a negative arc and then flash cooled it, this produced a mostly level surface at the waterline. I figure this gives me about 20 minutes of working time until the hogging returns. By the. It should be firmly glued.

I'll trade you guys some photos for some advice. How do I get the support wax off of the 3d printing? I don't wanna melt anything!! Ha! Thanks!!

So here is Scharnhorst, as you can see my theory about the lower hull was way off even though my measurements show it being close, it isn't. Filler time!

The split section is filled in and puttied.

The hull is a little fat at the bow and stern quarter so it'll need sanding. I have to add a contour strake down the side to bring the hull up to a greater width midships to sand back. Fat in one spot, skinny in the other. That's okay, still easier than making it from scratch.

The 3d portion is badly hogged but some steam took most of it out. Should be okay.

An update for you cool cats:

Lower hull is mated up, filling and sanding is done, rudders and shafts installed, propellers will come after I paint the lower hull. Some issues though. The 3d printed upper hull has a slight (and I mean slight) warp to starboard. This isn't something I can photograph but it's there, trust me. So that means I had to compensate a bit here and there.

The phot makes the model look messy but there is a lot of sanding dust and light playing tricks, it's very smooth and is going to look great. It's not perfect though, the limitations of what I'm doing here have to be taken into account. I'm going to paint the lower hull as it would have appeared having not been drydocked in some time. I was inspired by this model:

So anyway, enough about that, time to start with the PE. I already have the ultra fine brass stock for the masts, PE rails are sitting here, and if I'm feeling extra froggy, I'll build a PE AR196.

I know that Flyhawk is going to release a 1/2000 scale kit in a few months that'll probably make my Scharnhorst look slovenly and lumpen but these 3d printed models are just masterpieces. I love working with them.

By the time you see this pic, she will be all airbrushed. Here is the finished product before the primer went on. I'll post photos later of the blocked in airbrushing results.

The antifowling paint will be heavily weathered but above the waterline relatively clean. She hadn't been drydocked in a bit so some paint wear and fading is expected.

This pic was taken prior to the acetone cleaning. I load the airbrush with pure acetone and clean like a madman. The acetone drys so fast once it's been atomized no damage occurs even on non compatible surfaces.
