I received an interesting email from Shapeways today introducing Black High Definition Acrylate.  You can read more about it here:  https://www.shapeways.com/blog/ar...utm_campaign=20160331-HD-Acrylate

It sounds like it holds detail better than FUD and it sounds like it has similar strength and flexibility to WSF.  Kind of a "best of both worlds"...and it's less expensive than FUD!  While it sounds great for ships, I'm actually kind of stoked to see if this will work well for our 1/900 aircraft.  I love the detail of FUD, but I never buy it for aircraft any longer because they're constantly breaking.  However, I find aircraft in WSF have a higher defect rate than ships and I end up constantly asking for reprints.

So, have any of our resident, awesome designers started playing around with this?  I know it's just recently been released to the maker community, but I'd love to start hearing some feedback on it. I'd also be willing to pay for a test print or two to help move things along if the material is promising!

That will be great if it truly isn't brittle.

Is it like this......?

http://youtu.be/ihR9SX7dgRo

If so it's known as CLIP and has been out for at least a year.
Sounds promising and changes 3D printing as we know it.

Cost wise, its seems to be a bit less that Frosted Ultra Detail, and falls between WSF and Frosted Extreme Detail.   Just ordered a few to test and see how they look compared to WSF.  I will let you all know how they turn out. I think the detail and sturdiness will be a plus, but I wonder how much paint that black surface is going to soak up.  Cost wise it might prove to be the end for FUD, but won't replace WSF due to price.

Here are the price differences

Stalingrad 1/1800
WSF- $13.19
FUD- $31.28
FED- $47.42
Black Acrilic- $28.18

Cruiser X 1/1800
WSF- $8.75
FUD- $21.48
FED- $30.07
Black Acrylic $19.52

Nezamozhnik X2 DD 1/1800
WSF- $6.61
FUD- $12.70
FED- $15.14
Black Acrylic- $12.17

I think the black will be fine for painting, Shapeways does say it's kind of meant for miniatures.  Well, as long as it's less than FUD, stronger and more flexible than FUD, then I'm in.

Thanks for the note squint!

And here they are

Now I almost always buy WSF, so the detail is amazing.  I can't really say compared to the Frosted Details how it stands up.    But rigidity is all that was promised.  Just did a few impromptu drop tests on the Stalingrad from 3 feet with no breakage.  The material is somewhat flexible and gives rather than breaks.

The feel is that of old Axis and Allies board game pieces, very similar to injection molded plastic, but again with a bit more give.

Longer review to come.

That looks very promising except for the cost. Is on of them missing the gun barrels on the aft turret?

Yes, it is.  It's been an issue I have been having with Shapeways for a bit now.  It seems that even if they are designed the same, barrels just disappearing during printing.  Happens everyone and a while to random turrets.

Now for the bottom picture you can see that somehow the hull got distorted during printing.  I bet it has to do with temperature fluctuation as the material was being laid down.  I hope that is something they can figure out before it goes into full production.

You can also see that there is some glossy residue in some of the detailed crevasses.   I assume standard washing will take care of it.

The hull itself has quite a bit of flex.  You also see stratification up the bow of the Stalingrad, but I can't feel the steps at all. Same with the deck and other flat surfaces.  There is absolutely no graininess.

Personally, I see this materiel as a direct replacement for the Frosted Details.  And while it may cost double WSF, I can see most people switching to it.  Especially those that just want a few ships here or there. For Weeds and the others that buy in bulk with multiples of each ship, WSF may still be the better option.

I've been having a lot of WSF ships arrive without the barrels of the guns...they print to the blast bags, but stop and all you see is the support structure underneath.

I like the look, but that bend in the hull is scary.  Getting that fixed will be important.  I saw they sent another email about it and have a new video on their blog about the acrylate.  Seems pretty cool and showed some amazing print outs.

Thanks for getting some samples.  Let us know when it goes into full production!

I have had incomplete prints like that from every material. I think these detailed miniatures really strain the printers to the maximum of their capability. I was hoping this process might have improved on that too, but evidently not.

Some of it has to do with the quality/conformity of the 3D computer model as well.

Bad news for my wallet - if they get the production issues worked out, I'll have to replace my whole WSF fleet...

Thanks for sharing - this is potentially a pretty big step forward in Shapeways!

I'd like to see some aircraft made from this material.  FUD is just too brittle; I'm hoping this is strong & flexible enough to get me some planes I can recognize when I put them on the board instead of the WSF blobs that fly around!

It is now available to teh public and I have set all my models to be sold in it.  But I must stress that I have not ordered since the original test batch.  So I am not sure what you will be getting.  But if you do give it a try, post here to tell everyone how it works out.

I'll probably try out a couple in the next few weeks.

Wow! Did all the prices go up? I don't remember the Ultra Detail plastics being that expensive before.

I don't think so.  Was there one in particular you were looking at.  I did an auto update to make all of my models in the new material.  It is quite possible I messed up and changed my base mark up on something.  I just went through a few listings and they seem right.
