Got to admit, I haven't even cracked the Captain and Crew cards yet.  I need to take a look at those.

while they aren't as good as x-wings they are great for filling in the points and adding historical things (such as well trained gunners etc for the brits historically and french unhistorically) under a points system.

My favourites are Well trained gunners, good aim, fast thinking captain, elite marines and hold fast.

I must admit that somehow the way the C&C cards were implemented did not leave me very excited. It's hard to put my finger on it, but somehow I feel it could be better done.

In WAS many SAs are huge because they relate to taking/protecting objectives. That is not a thing in SGN.

Also in WAS there is often the search for synergy between SAs. There doesn't seem to be too much of that in SGN.

Then there is the issue of SAs being tied to units. I don't know why that would matter, but I like them less being "free floating"

It does seem like there still may be some options for new kinds of C&C abilities that would be more enticing. I could definitely see all kinds of movement SAs--allow user to avoid a collision, allow to move one ruler-width ahead at the end of a turn, allow the ship to travel only part of its movement arc, allow it to take a one-more or one-less sharp turn than planned...

Also maybe C&C abilities around special damage--either to avoid/mitigate a specific type of damage, or to inflict it.

I think they needed a few things; illustrations, more ship type (1st,3rd,5th) specific ones, more national flavour/traits etc and more variety in what they do.  But as is I am very happy they exist as opposed to not and use them in every game.

february 9th the reprinted wave 1 and the 2 new spanish ships and british ships hit stores (constitution and victory are supposedly held up in a dock strike lol at the harbour) so there will be lots of good stuff to buy.

I am for the first time going to buy 2 each of the spanish 3rd rates and 5th rates so I can play both versions of each (heroe/argonaute, sirena/ilghia) so I can play the spanish as a full fledged naval build.  Zealous and Orpheus for the british are good purchases as well if you need another 3rd rate and a very small 5th rate in orpheus which the british don't have.

Yeah my MM order is waiting to be shipped on the 9th. I also ordered doubles of the Spanish. My logical adult brain tells me I should have just pretended some French ships were Spanish, but years of WAS has trained my inner child to be a sucker for some new paint and a different flag...

lol relatedly ironic I believe these spanish ships were gifted to the spanish from the french after trafalgar.  I feel the same logic goes out the window against the thought of playing the spanish as a pure faction in their own colours, plus it doesnt hurt that the ship names spanish variants of hero and argonaut are pretty cool.

The Spanish and additional Royal Navy Wave-1 repaints showed up in the mail yesterday.   Haven't gotten a detailed look at the stats yet, but I'm happy to report no broken mast issues. Looking forward to getting the Spanish on the map at some point, and I remain hopeful that we'll see some of the big Spanish ships from Trafalgar at some point.

The masts seem sturdy. As expected there are no big stats surprises but I think the Spanish SOL paint job is among my favorites... The Spaniards seem to be selling well so hopefully that will finally light a fire under wave 3...

If you can find your way to the beautiful Pacific Northwest, I've posted an opportunity for you to make a little history. We'll be playing the largest historical scenario ever for SGN, the Glorious First of June at Enfliade! in Olympia, WA on Sunday May 24!

For anyone who's been patiently waiting for the USS Constitution (or HMS Victory), they should be available for purchase on May 4.

http://www.coolstuffinc.com/p/210741

Constitution is one tough frigate, she can basically stand up to a 2-deck ship of the line.

Has anyone had a mast break off?

While playing a rare SoG game this week a mast broke from one of my frigates. I drilled out the hole and used contact cement to fix it but I don't know how durable it will be.

Also, does anyone know where to get additional ship mats?

That's annoying!

There were the many problems with the masts for the first printing of wave 2 (and to a lesser degree for the start sets printed at that time). But those broke in transit. It seems to be quite rare for a mast to break when the ship is in someone's possession. I think on the various message boards over the ~18 months since the game came out there have been maybe one or two reports like yours.

When people were dealing with the wave 2 problems, your fix was probably preferred approach.

They do seem to be out of stock at all the usual places don't they? There are a few offers on Amazon for $9-10, which is not TOO bad a gouge over the normal $7-8...

The mast fix seems to be holding but is disappointing considering the cost of these minis.

Is there an alternative for the ship mats?

yeah that sucks, hopefully it's a one-off...

my personal preference, which I've plugged here before, is to print out custom ship mats for each game using an XL spreadsheet, for use with paper/pencil recordkeeping

http://sailsofglory.org/downloads.php?do=file&id=31

Saves a LOT of space and aggravation.

Alternately you could probably just xerox some mats (color or BW depending on how picky you are). They don't really DO much except providing some boxes for various chits to go in...

Some good news in a recent Kickstarter update from Ares games!

Quote:
We are at work on the next wave of ships, that we hope should be on the market before the end of the year. With this release, we will add to the English fleet 50-gun Portland class ships, 64-gun Artesien class ships for the French, as well as new ships-of-the-line for the Spanish fleet - the fundamental Meregildos (Santa Ana, Real Carlos, Principe de Asturias...) and Third-Rate ships such as the San Juan Nepomuceno and Bahama.

Pretty excited to see some of these new ships on the way!

Good stuff. I'm glad Ares is continuing to support the game with more ship releases.

Nice to see KR Multicase making foam for this game.  I love SoG, but it has got to be one of the more storage intensive games I've seen (fragile masts, tons of cards, lots of cardboard flare, markers, bases, etc).

It certainly shows that others feel the game has a future.  I enjoy the game but it is fiddly.

Same here.  Its a great game, and visually, its pretty stunning.  BUT, the sheer volume of "stuff" can be ponderous.  Massive storage challenge if you have sizeable collection, and tons of stuff to break out and set up to play a game.  I currently own sixty ships...that's sixty maneuver decks I have to find storage for.  They take up almost as much card storage space as my 600 ship W@S collection.
