the tokens are a tad fiddly but having no dice is refreshing avoiding hearing people complain about dice rolls will be worth it lol.

I opened my SoG starter set after X-mas and found that the ships do not stay on the base very well.

Has anyone else had this problem and if so, how did you fix it?

all the ships fit on the same size base so the smaller ships have smaller pegs which makes them more loose, the 1st rates fit on pretty tight though.

I wonder if duct or foil tape would help?

Playing against my main Sails of glory opponent I have to say Frigates are much more useful then I initially thought they would be (from various things I have read) , he is convinced that frigates are the best units in the game especially the heavy ones (ex sybille) and he has done quite good he is 2-1 against me and if not for some unlucky collision catastrophes manuevering all his frigates around lol he might be 3-0 against me.

I am having quite a bit of fun playing it so far I find a typical game not including set up time takes about 1.5hrs (playing 300 points )and victory has generally been determined by maneuvering as opposed to luck.  I would really like to get my hands on the 4 kick starter ships I have most of everything else.

I haven't done any research on this gaming system, but does it take terrain??  I'm going to be working on some islands very soon, and a harbor set for a different gaming system.  is it worth looking into this? are there a few ships available at a cheap price to use as scale?

three replies would be great...if possible.  thanks for looking

dano, the most affordable source for the ships I've found in Miniature Market (link to their store on the right hand side of the page, look for Sails of Glory under miniature games).

The game does use terrain (and shore batteries), but they have been limited to punch out cardboard sets, not 3D terrain.

Cheers,
SWO

Good to hear.  I didn't have a lot of luck in the first few games I played with the Wave 1 Frigates, particularly the light British variety.  I like what I see in the big Wave 2 Frigates, but I haven't had a chance to play with them yet.  Nice to hear they are holding their own.

I only have a few games under my belt but from what I can gather is that its better to keep your big ships at long range fire as opposed to in close where catastrophes like fire, leaking etc happen.  That tradeoff on the other end of the spectrum with frigates appears to be worth it.

In case anyone is curious, I posted a few more details about my pencil/paper ship mat generator over at the Anchorage:

http://sailsofglory.org/showthrea...-Ship-s-Mat&p=41996#post41996

This is my way of dealing with the "fiddlyness" and table real estate issues, and I love it...

Fred, I'm hoping to get in a game or two in a couple of weeks and I may have to try this.  Might make a huge difference in the amount of clutter we have to break out and keep track of on the table.

The genesis for us was when we started going beyond 2 ships per side. My sons wanted to do 3 vs. 3 or bigger, and I was just dreading the prospect of ship mats covering every surface in all kinds of precarious ways, and it was more or less a non-starter.

Now we do 4 vs. 4 and it's just 2 sheets of fully portable paper.

Hey, Dano the sloops and frigates are around $11/12 plus shipping from MM.

I haven't played much but I do know that the game uses LOS and has the option for islands and shoals. 3-d terrain might work for islands.

One of the things I like about other systematically similar games to sails of glory like x-wing is the various character/crew/upgrades/skills etc cards that you can tweak your build/ships with. Historical games are fantastic for this sort of thing since you have various historical things to draw from, Sails of glory in particular (the upgrade captain and crew cards are great but more would be even better) could really benefit to make the ships different so while HMS Vanguard and HMS Goliath are virtually identical(or are identical i havent compared) stat wise HMS Goliath could receive a captain card (foley) that gives it a special ability or tactic representing Foley and Goliaths actions at the battle of the nile.

Bringing up the subject of napoleon, a napoleon character card once again representing the french mission prior to the battle of the nile would be great for adding variety to the game and would add new gameplay having the french fleet (with bonuses/benefits from the napoleon card) acting in a different manner ex supporting a landing/invasion.

The game has soo much potential it really is untapped

Got to admit, I haven't even cracked the Captain and Crew cards yet.  I need to take a look at those.
