I bet if you wanted to you could actually have the turrets rotate by mounting a rod pin in the bottom and drilling out a hole for it in the ship base. It would be a bit o' work but could be worth it in the end when she is finished.
Hey WOC! You need to seriously recruit this lad for your sculpting dept for WAS!!! Him GOT TALENT!!! |
Ta Mate!
Rotating turrets would have been awesome, but I need to focus on making it a workable playing piece as well. It's a bit distracting if the turrets fall off
I might try it on a later mini though, just to see if nothing else
Hmmm... Making minis for a living ey? Better be careful what I wish for |
Counter sink the under side like they do on the actual minis. take a bit of plastic rod cut to length and use a soldering iron with the pointed tip filed flat to expand the rod at the under side. I used to use this little trick when I wanted something to rotate or turn when I used to do a lot of scratchbuilding and kit bashin years ago. I scratch built a fifth wheel travel trailer for a Ford F250 extended cab Dually that I built previously. I scratch built the receiver to put in the bed and also a vented tailgate for it. The whole rig took 1st place in several IPMS contests on the local and regional level. I sold it to a guy that owned a Coachman dealership so he could put it on his desk. (the 5th wheel trailer was patterned after one of the coachman models. for 1998) The buggar offered me $500.00 cash right there on the spot. _________________ The SCA: Just an excuse for getting dressed up in Medieval clothing and beat each other up with padded sticks! |

I'll definitely try that method next time Thanks for the tip!

Big Update!
I had some time yesterday to work on the superstructure of my Duilio, so I made some alarming progress... hehe...
http://dev.pardalis.se/waratsea/caioduilio/img_1684.jpg
Smokestacks test fitted as well as the base for the forward superstructure.
In the background you can see the start of the rear superstructure. I've used a pinvice to drill up a hollow plastic rod so I can insert a thinner rod into it, making a more durable unit.
http://dev.pardalis.se/waratsea/caioduilio/img_1685.jpg
Here they are, glued together.
http://dev.pardalis.se/waratsea/caioduilio/img_1686.jpg
Added a balcony, which I also used the pinvice to drill through.
http://dev.pardalis.se/waratsea/caioduilio/img_1687.jpg
Fitted to the ship, I also added a small fire director to the balcony.
http://dev.pardalis.se/waratsea/caioduilio/img_1690.jpg
Here I've added the lower part of the bridge, these are just bits of sculpted styrene.
http://dev.pardalis.se/waratsea/caioduilio/img_1691.jpg
The finished forward superstructure, complete with bridge, mast and fire director.
To make the mast I used the pinvice to drill through the layers of styrene, same for the fire director which consists of two sections of hollow rod, and a section of rod going through it.
You can also see mid ships firedirectors and AA-guns. Also AA-guns on the Y and B turrets.

A front view of Caio Duilio as she looks right now.

Side view.
She is nearing completion now... Can't wait to paint her _________________

Wow!
I have been wondering how on earth I would make turrets out of just styrene.
Stupid me.
Off to the LGS to get some green stuff! _________________ I have to make a new sig because my old one is too wide for this new look... |

She looks amazing. When you finish, post a photo through the attach file function please, so that it enters the gallery. _________________

Sure will ND!
But it may take a while due to an unfortunate kitchen accident. I knifed my self over the tips of my left index and middle finger while slicing up lemons for lemonade. Life gave me lemons while I was MAKING lemonade? Oh the irony! _________________

Thanks mate!
I clicked
Some positions were a bit tantalising, but I'm fairly well rooted in Malmö and I like small organisations _________________
