But yeah, mostly they were used for ASW and recon duties. |
but were they succesfull??? I mean...they've must have been very usefull otherwise I dont think they would've been included in this game...

BTW - Could someone post a link to the actual blog entry, as well as the response discussing the French ships? I am an idiot, and can't find them. Thanks. _________________ AAM:

oh, thanks for digging this up guys, maybe it's just in my head, but it seems like discussion has been going down for a bit, not any more, this is cool news.
First, Italian fighter, I think a great move, would have just been lame to have a major power that you couldn't really play by itself. Is there any chance that this is a repaint of either the sea hurricane or the german fighter? Either way it will go great with the Italian torp bomber and let those Ambras and MTB's survive long enough to fire a shot.
Next, Halifax could be cool, other patrol bombers are torpedo oriented, was this unit ever fitted with torps?
Finally, those Tribal destroyers, does his comment mean that they will have a 7 in close range gunnery? That could certainly go well with Javelin, one with smoke and torps, the other gets rid of enemy destroyers (and cruisers too).
And, even though the French sub won't be Sourcouf, its still nice that the French will be playable by themselves, I'm glad.
This news made my weekend. _________________

Yes, excellent! I like to play my games historically, but with no fighters its hard to pull.

Handley Page Halifax. I don't think they carried torpedos, they were the planes that bombed the Tirpitz (not the one that sunk it, those were lancaster B1 specials, two years later)!
Additionally, RAF coastal command used them for ASW.

Seven dice for the tribal? Thats about as much firepower as a 6 inch cruiser. It only had 4.7 inch guns...!

Which are eligible candidates? Anyone want to make a guess?

Here is a listing of French submarines and their fate.
It is sad the so many of them had to be scuttled.

Next week while I'm looking up Oakland/Juneaus, I'll also research the various French sub populations and design-lineages, see what I can WAG for logical candidate classes. _________________ <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

| I hope Halifax has a good anti-sub SA, presumably related to either detecting the sub or "keeping it submerged" |

I would guess the French sub would be either Requin class, or Pascal class. Both classes had a large number of vessels commissioned, some were salvaged by the Axis (although not used, I think), and some were transferred to the Free French. They seem like good candidates to me. _________________ AAM:

Yes, we know, but those don't come with a little plastic submarine you push around the table. Also, it's just fun to speculate.
I don't know how long its been down there, but I see the Task Force box has been added to the counter on the bottom of the page. That's a cool addition, haven't seen it before. _________________

According to the site at the link below Halifax's sank 3 U-boats and assisting in sinking 6 others. In the text they also mention sinking an Italian submarine. Halifax's carried 8 depth charges, and later they carried 600 lbs of anti-submarine bombs.

Just out of curiosity, would you rather have an anti-air cruiser like the UK's Dido class, or a land based fighter? I think I would actually rather have a Flakschiff like the Niobe than land based fighter to protect my Bismarck. It's a shame the Italians didn't make an AA cruiser.

It's the Halifax bomber!! All I care about.
I should add, to me it is as good as having the lancaster in the game for I.
She also can double for an aussie plane, i think I am more then happy waiting to see the bristol beaufighter now. _________________

No italian AA cruisers were in service at the end of the war for the Regia Marina on 08/09/43, date of italian shame surrender and "change of ally", with Regia Marina that had to go to Malta and run aground his beaches, but they was building them.
Like the Aquila carrer was not ended, they were building two AA cruisers, the Etna and Vesuvio.
As i wrote in the post about destroyers, few steel to end works and few oil to use better the navy. |
